Following last week’s look at an opening for a Senior Architect at CHECKSET, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore roles for a Structural Steel Specialist at the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).
The successful candidate will support the AISC in its mission to write the specifications to which all steel buildings in the U.S. are designed and built, and to produce design standards that advance the quality, economy, and safety of steel bridges. The position, which is available in six different U.S. cities, requires a minimum of three years’ experience in building design and construction, with a preference for technical experience in structural steel fabrication.
Why the role interests us
The importance of effective building codes has been ever-present in our editorial over the past 12 months, whether in relation to the Champlain Towers collapse in Surfside, Florida, or fires at publicly-funded properties in the Bronx and Philadelphia. For architects seeking to make an impact beyond their core role in the design team, roles such as the AISC’s can allow architects to inform the safety of thousands of projects at once through the act of overlaying adequate health, safety, and environmental regulations.
The AISC role also offers an opportunity to reflect on the future of steel in the industry. While many of the material science breakthroughs featured on our editorial in recent times focus on timber, concrete, and biomaterials, innovation in steel has garnered comparably less attention. This comes despite a warning from McKinsey in 2020 that the steel industry is “among the three biggest producers of carbon dioxide.”
Steel has not been entirely absent from the material science discourse, however. Last year, we reported on news from Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB, who announced that they had produced the “world’s first fossil-free steel.”
2021 also saw the world’s first 3D-printed steel footbridge installed in Amsterdam, while Morphosis’ Shenzhen skyscraper used a pioneering structural steel system to deliver the world’s tallest detached-core building.
