ICYMI, back in July Alexander Walter featured sekou cooke STUDIO in a Studio Snapshot. When asked to describe his work/practice in three words Sekou answered "Build dope shit."
Eric Owen Moss shared photos of his self-designed private residence overlooking the coastline on a small 30’ by 50’ plot in Pacific Palisades/Santa Monica Canyon. To Daniel Shirk it was "exactly the cool yet quirky design you’ve come to expect from EOM. I love the geometric gymnastics of the massing…The interior is a Piranesian delight". proto felt "There are so many really terrible structures going up in socal I have to admire getting something so odd & peculiar constructed with high quality. Not a fan of the space making, but impressed with the project nevertheless". x-jla added "I actually really like the color. The yellow/green makes the house fun and gives some vibrancy to the community."
Later the big green head offered an explanation for their moderation on the post.
"We removed all comments that were posted by anonymous users and left all posted by people using their real names. Too much anonymous, toxic chest-puffing going on. We'll continue moderating it and will only allow people commenting with their real names OR comments sharing thoughtful contributions to the discussion. Negative comments are welcome if they're smart and informed."
Reacting to the news that work was complete on the new headquarters for the National Bank of Kuwait (NBK), archanonymous offered up some praise "I like seeing towers with more solid facade, less glass, and some sort of relation to climatic needs, so bravo to Foster" yet lamented "the larger issue of designing and constructing massive energy-intensive buildings in the middle of the desert for rich clients and corporations, but that's contemporary architecture for you!"
As for news regarding the completion of Sluishuis, citizen appreciated the inclusion of "2D drawings…Always helpful, but especially so for stunt buildings" but was surprised "not a single interior shot looking through trapdoor/porthole? Seems like that would be the money shot for this project." For their part, monosierra was curious "how that slope is resolved inside the building. BIG is at its best (and worst) while resolving interior spaces and details that result from a macro-level formal gesture. Sometimes the spaces are cramped afterthoughts. Sometimes they are sublime."
The Gehry Partners design for an Ocean Avenue mixed-use development received final approval from Santa Monica City Council. To Alan Loomis it was unfortunate the tower was "chopped by the City's Downtown Code. In the original proposal, it was much taller, such that it would match the height of Cesar Pelli's 100 Wilshire tower. The symmetry of Pelli's slick white tower and Gehry's twisted white tower would have made a compelling skyline."
Donna Sink liked what she saw of the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize, 2022 MCHAP.emerge shortlist "Some really lovely projects here. So earthy."
Factory No. 6 Lobby Railing in Columbus, OH by JBAD (Jonathan Barnes Architecture and Design) and 137 West 13th Street in New York, NY by k—da and Helena Clunies Ross are just two of the latest top images (in no particular order) from the board Details.
Over at his blog Orhan Ayyüce shared "the first course descriptions" from SCI-Arc’s earliest days, thanks to his friend and inaugural alumni, Ralph Mursinna. The content/tone reminded Will Galloway
"of the London School of Architecture in some ways. Especially for its clear intent to be a response to a very specific circumstance…In any case a good reminder for our time…I have to say the students are carrying a lot of idealism (and vision) with them lately, somehow, in spite of - or maybe because of - all the craziness. It is up to the schools to meet that energy and carry it forward. Just like Sci-Arc did all those years ago."
The Place des Arts in Sudbury, a joint venture by Moriyama & Teshima Architect and Bélanger Salach Architecture, recently opened.
Looking for a new gig?
In hiring news, CCNY appointed Dr. Marta Gutman as their new dean of Spitzer School of Architecture and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's SARUP announced Mo Zell as Interim Dean.
citizen for one approved of the former "An accomplished academic/professional and genuinely nice person, in my experience."
In open positions, The School of Architecture (SoA) at Carnegie Mellon University is accepting candidates for a tenure-track faculty position in Computational Design. With preference "given to candidates whose research and creative work relate computational approaches to questions of gender, indigeneity, and race, or advance innovative methodologies to address design, architectural, or urban challenges affecting traditionally underserved and disenfranchised populations."
ArchKid wanted to discuss the Side Hustle.
SneakyPete came in hot right out of the gate "Side hustles are a plague. Fuck side hustles." On the other hand Almosthip "did some side stuff about 10 years ago when I was trying to save enough for a down payment on my house." Similarly greenlander1 noted "The first person to 'retire' I knew from arch school who wasn't already rich was a crazy side hustler since college. Bought a handful of apartment units and was retired by early 40's. So envious but he totally deserves it." However, blackdogsketch argued that based on their experience the "Bottom line, you are better off working towards making your main job paying you better, if money is the issue."
MDH-ARCH is working "on a 6 unit building with retail on the first floor" and following initial conversations with the client needs adviceon how to proceed. Specifically, "Should I ask for ownership stake or a % fee to manage the project." First reallynotmyname had questions "Do you all plan a short term exit like selling condo units or fully leasing up the building and selling it to an investor. Or do you plan to hold the building for many years and take in annual rental income?" greenlander1 has been on both sides of these sorts of deals and was happy to lend a hand "Part of it depends on whether your potential equity structure is GP only or GP/LP (raised capital outside of your client)."
betonbrut wasn’t the only one to emphasize "A good lawyer in this instance is cheap insurance for you either way."
Finally, atelier nobody wanted feedback on a recent design-sketch "Would you consider this overly complex building geometry?" As they explained it wasn’t "quite a shitpost - more of a ‘dump on my SE’ post. My structural engineer thinks it's overly complex". Le Courvoisier was surprised as "That’s not overly complex…pretty typical in vernacular architecture" and Non Sequitur quipped "There is nothing complex in there. Any mortal revit user should be able to whip that up in no time c/w trims/reveals/profiles." Though joseffischer had some suggested redlines "line them up…provide gutter/fascia at same level, same slope, to clean everything up and make it work better."
Unfortunately as atelier nobody explained "that would be more elegant - it was what I was hoping for originally. Unfortunately, there are other things going on with the existing conditions that are driving the eave heights and won't let us align them…"
