An updated version of PenPlace, Amazon’s forthcoming suburban DC headquarters dubbed ‘HQ2,’ has been released by the company showcasing a series of design changes that were the result of an eight-month feedback process from the local community in Arlington, Virginia.
The company said they were working to meet the requests of Arlingtonians that will eventually make the new buildings more accessible and architecturally diverse.
“We appreciate the ideas and have made changes to enhance the overall connectivity of the site,” an Amazon statement read. “We also incorporated additional sustainable elements and more greenery into the design, and diversified the architecture within PenPlace. These updates make the entire project even better, benefitting our neighbors and all those that will visit HQ2.”
The statement detailed changes made to the facades, material, and envelopes of all three buildings, all of which will feature increased biophilic design elements as seen in the updated renderings of the project. Amazon also said it has added an additional 5,500 square feet of planted areas as well as a new east-to-west pathway that will aid in users’ increased wayfinding ability.
The $2.5 billion project is expected to break ground early next year after finally receiving approval from Arlington County in December 2019. Construction is expected to last until 2025. NBBJ is behind the development. Archinect will have more updates as they become available.

Really curious if the glazing will indeed be all curved like the new render shows, or flat like in the initial render.
Regardless of updates, the design continues to suck.
The facades and rooflines of the three box buildings surrounding the soft serve pile are especially bad and lazy. There’s really no excuse for those. In the center, the ziggurat thing might be a client mandated gimmick from the highest echelons of Amazon. If that’s the case, there’s nothing to be done there by nbbj but produce the turd and keep invoicing.
World hunger could be eliminated for $30b.
Jeff Bezos is worth > $200b. His idea of helping people is launching himself into space.
Unfortunately he came back.
That building still looks like the poop emoji
Spheres? Maybe Amazon can fund the Hollywood Lighthouse for the California Creative Center to fight climate change?
I googled 'glass turd' for an image (because I'm still an adolescent in many ways):
Craiyon did it better...
You know, my feeling towards that story has shifted a lot over the course of my life.
