Luxury spa designer Therme Group is making a big splash as it looks to expand into the U.S. for the first time.
The megaspa makers are back with a new design that would add a “wellness theme park” to the city as part of a $350 million development proposal. That effort will be overseen by former High Line developer Robert Hammond, who has officially joined Therme according to reporting yesterday in Crain’s and the New York Post.
Hammond noted the public’s demand for spaces that come in the form of “a park and a botanical garden and a gathering place and programming,” adding that, like the High Line, Therme “combines nature, community, well-being, and art together.”
“As someone who understands firsthand the healing power of nature and the importance of mindfulness, I believe everyone needs a place where they can comfortably and affordably reconnect with themselves, nature, and the environment around them,” he added.
The group is actively searching for waterfront space in Manhattan and has acknowledged the need to reformat its typical spa design, which can take up to 20 acres. Therme announced a similar scheme in August that would transform a portion of Toronto’s lakefront Ontario Place with the help of Diamond Schmitt Architects.
If all goes accordingly, the plan will get underway around 2025. Therme chairman John Alschuler pointed to Hammond’s shared history of urban renewal projects like the High Line as the reasoning behind the former Vincent Scully Prize winner’s retention.
“Given Robert’s experience revitalizing overlooked spaces into critical pieces of civic infrastructure, we’re thrilled that he will bring his visionary approach to Therme,” he said. “Robert’s stewardship in creating experiences that people across the world are excited to participate in is a testament to his ability to connect communities to our urban environment. As the world emerges from the last 18 months of isolation and virtual connections, we’re eager to bring the accessible, affordable experience that Therme offers to our corner of the world.”
