North Carolina’s Research Triangle is getting a major upgrade thanks to a massive new billion-dollar mixed-use development unveiled this week by 10 Design.
The firm is behind the new Downtown South Raleigh Master Plan which includes a 20,000-capacity football stadium and virtual reality center, aiming to enhance the city’s startup-laden downtown south end.
Per the architect: “Connectivity is at the core of the scheme. 10 Design has ensured seamless accessibility from Downtown Raleigh through the creation of a bridge loop that encloses the entire development, providing efficient circulation from in and out of the site and with the rest of the city. The scheme will be a positive connection to Raleigh’s extensive greenways system and local historic neighborhoods.”
The comprehensive plan takes the profile of native oak trees as its inspiration for the 32-acre site through a series of pocket parks and a central pedestrian walkway that connects users to mid-rise residential towers in a newly formed district bordering Interstate 40.
The project is of heightened importance to 10 Design partner Ted Givens, who grew up in the city. “It is particularly special to me, as it allowed me to transfer a lot of the learnings I gathered from many years working abroad in Asia and around the world to my hometown in North Carolina,” he told Global Construction Review. “The design for Raleigh provides a mix of simple buildings that merge with the natural landscape and iconic pieces that activate the master plan.”
The ten-figure development joins another billion-dollar Apple campus scheme that was announced earlier this year.
