A cosmic new museum is bringing out the stars in Shanghai thanks to a celestial design from Ennead.
The Shanghai Astronomy Museum opens this weekend following a five-year construction process that left client Shanghai Science and Technology Museum with a new outpost in the heart of the city’s burgeoning Lingang district.
The New York-based firm’s plans for the 420,000-square-foot museum won an international competition in 2014 for its tripartite scheme comprised of a planetarium, IMAX theater, exhibitions spaces, and a new 78-foot-tall solar telescope that will make the research center the largest of its kind anywhere in the world.
Sun, moon, and stars come together to make a smart reference to the three-body problem of mathematics. The curvilinear structure of the museum is meant as a reflection of the orbit of the planets themselves. The planetarium’s profile is choreographed to look like a moonrise. Heaven and earth into three forms: oculus, sphere, and inverted dome.
"We want people to understand the special nature of the Earth as a place that hosts life, unlike any other place that we know of in the universe," Design Partner Thomas Wong told CNN.
Each of the museum’s three structures also serves as an astrological instrument, a feature its designer says conveys a higher purpose to visitors searching for a spiritual connection in the stars.
“In linking the new museum to both scientific purpose and to the celestial references of buildings throughout history, the exhibits and architecture will communicate more than scientific content: they will illuminate what it means to be human in a vast and largely unknown universe,” Wong said in a statement.
Shanghai’s newest must-see destination won’t be the only astronomical project that has helped the firm leave an impact on the design world: Ennead was also behind the development of the Rose Center for Earth and Space at New York’s American Museum of Natural History.
A ceremony will be held on the 17th before the museum opens to the public on Sunday.
