A redevelopment project led by Owen Development in St. Louis' Grand Center Arts District invites a group of groundbreaking architects to design homes for the St. Louis community. The "On Olive" redevelopment will be transformed by LA's Michael Maltzan Studio, New York City-based MOS Studio, Boston-based Höweler + Yoon, Mexico City-based Productora Studio, Guadalajara-based Macias Peredo, St. Louis-based Mitchell-Wall, and Tatiana Bilbao of Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO.
According to the On Olive site, Owen Development brought together local and internationally recognized architects to "design homes for single-family housing within a three-and-one-half acre urban landscape. The seventeen homes are thoughtfully placed throughout the development, combined with a fascinating mix of amenities and sculptural attractions." Joining the list of powerhouse architects who will design homes on the north side of Olive Street is Cory Henry of Atelier Cory Henry and Constance Vale of Constance Vale Studio.
Both architects have made waves within the industry for being recognized as award-winning emerging architects. Henry is an LA-based interdisciplinary design practitioner and academic whose work focuses on architecture, urbanism, placemaking, and visual arts. Vale is an architect, researcher, and academic based in St. Louis. Her work focuses on the "aesthetic and conceptual investigations in the territory between architecture, art, and theater."
CityScene STL reports, "the homes will be built on the north side of Olive Street on a strip of land that's currently vacant but is ready for new construction to take place. The houses of the two winners will be built as display models along with a house designed by Boston-based Höweler + Yoon. Prospective buyers may tour the houses and select one of the designs to be built on a lot within the development. Many of the houses on the south side of the street are already under construction."
There currently stand eight houses on the south side of the street, with construction underway on Olive Street between Spring and Vandeventer. CityScene STL adds, "On Olive will bring new, modern homes to the City's Central Corridor and include designs from some of the World's best architects. In a way, this is as much of an art piece and architectural showcase as much as it is about quality housing."
