Shohei Shigematsu of OMA announces the firm's upcoming project, the ReefLine, in collaboration with cultural placemaker Ximena Caminos. Leading the project's masterplan and structural design will be Shigematsu and his team, while Caminos will lead as its artistic director.
Known for its high-end coastal amenities and luxury living, the project seems like a fitting attraction to add to Miami's growing list of "must-sees" aiming to entertain as well as inform.
The first of its kind in Miami Beach, the 7-mile park and artificial reef aims to "protect and serve Miami's marine life and coastal resilience efforts." Set to be completed in phases, the design team plans for the project's first mile to open in December 2021.
While the public attraction aims to draw in Miami inhabitants and tourists alike, The ReefLine's project was developed by BlueLab Preservation Society and Coral Morphologic, two leaders in marine biology research, preservation, and innovative underwater media. Researchers from the University of Miami and collaborative efforts from the City of Miami Beach are also heavily involved in the project.
Shigematsu shares in a statement, "We are excited to collaborate again with Ximena on a project that brings together culture and community. The ReefLine is unique because it brings attention to and mitigates the dangers of climate change in Miami while simultaneously enriching the city's vivid art scene. We look forward to working with the diverse group of experts and professionals on our first underwater cultural masterplan and sculpture."
