Previously featured on Archinect, artist Michael Velliquette has a new collection of paper sculptures that will be on display at the David Shelton Gallery in an exhibition called Creations are Numberless, I Vow to Free Them.
By constructing objects that convey strength, intent, and durability, Velliquette's work redefines the fragile connotations of paper. The artist's process, done completely by hand, is so intricate and complex that some works can take up to 500 hours to complete.
The series of abstract layers that make up each sculpture suggest fortress like constructions, tiered mandalas, or complex gears. Velliquette's work is in the permanent collections of the Chazen Museum of Art; the Art Museum of South Texas; the Racine Art Museum; The San Antonio Museum of Art; The Progressive Corporation; The John Michael Kohler Art Center; and The Microsoft Collection.
