Architect and urban designer Liang Wang has been selected by Syracuse University as the 2020-21 Harry der Boghosian Fellow.
The fellowship will take Liang from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he is a current Doctor of Design candidate at Harvard University, to the Syracuse University School of Architecture, where he will teach one studio and two professional electives. Wang's research focus is situated around the history and theory of urban form, space, and politics within the realm of superblock development and the "architecture and idea of the city in East Asia," according to a press release.
Regarding Wang's selection, Michael Speaks, dean of the School of Architecture, writes, “Wang, whose research parallels that currently being developed by several of our faculty, is truly groundbreaking and will certainly augment and complement the work completed by past fellows. We are thrilled that he will be joining us this next year.”
Explaining how the fellowship might impact his career trajectory, Wang states via press release, "This prestigious fellowship not only embodies a remarkable lineage of innovative research and teaching, it also presents an excellent opportunity for me, as a young educator and practitioner, to expand my current research and explore new possibilities through teaching and collaboration.”
Wang has earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the Harbin Institute of Technology in China, a Masters of Architecture from Rice University, and a Masters of Architecture in Urban Design degree from the Graduate School of Design. He is also the co-founder of Commons Office, a "creative think tank and research-minded design practice" based in Boston and Shanghai.
