Los Angeles-based architects Julie Smith-Clementi and Frank Clementi, former founding partners at multidisciplinary architecture office Rios Clementi Hale Studios (RCH Studios), have launched a new comprehensive design practice offering "the full spectrum of place-based design."
The new firm, Smith-Clementi, will work in many of the same arenas that the two principals have engaged with over the decades, including educational projects, public space design, and re-programmed commercial and retail spaces. In addition, Smith-Clementi will continue a focus on residential projects and "artful product designs for the home.”
The two designers left RCH Studios in late 2019 and launched their new practice, according to an announcement, "to more directly work with clients and end users on broader place-based design."
The split follows a 35-year run at their previous firm, where the pair engaged in a long line of transformative urban and commercial projects across the country, especially in Los Angeles. Of particular note are the renovation and upgrade of the Hollywood Bowl, Music Center, and Greek Theatre facilities led by Smith-Clementi. In addition, the two helped design the Austin City Limits complex in Austin, Texas. More recently, Smith-Clementi led the design team tasked with redesigning the Jon Jerde-designed Horton Plaza complex in San Diego.
Describing the projected terrain of the new practice, Smith-Clementi writes, "I find the greatest satisfaction in creating urban experiences; places where people come together in a community. My long work at the Hollywood Bowl, for example, where thousands of people share a space over several hours, has given me a keen understanding of brand, performance, and place, with a healthy dose of logistics. I look forward with both renewed focus and breadth to envision rich and authentic places that celebrate all people.”
To which Clementi added, "I’ve joined my partner Julie Smith-Clementi to work on exactly the direct design collaborations that we’ve found most meaningful. From plates to parks, we’ve engaged the full spectrum of design. Our new firm allows us more agility to continue to envision unique and meaningful places for the diverse communities we love.”
