According to a recent CountryLiving article, the highly popular open floor plans featured in many HGTV remodeling shows are implemented for reasons most might not guess. Rhonda Kaysen, a New York Times contributor, recently said in an NPR interview, "the reason that they [HGTV] are so big on open concept is because it gets the male viewers. Like, guys like to watch sledgehammers and, like, taking out walls."
So, the open floor plans aren't necessarily the most ideal solution for every home, but rather, a strategic maneuver designed to attract the coveted male viewer.

LOL, my father-in-law has a "Demo Day" t-shirt.
I always cringe when I see lovely old wood, plaster and lath, etc. being indiscriminately smashed to bits by people without any sense or knowledge of quality or design.
HGTV is the worst thing to happen to architecture in at least a generation.
Patrimetric is a close runner-up?
Counterpoint: yes it is.
Back when we did residential, I had more trouble from people bring in shit they saw on Houzz than anything on HGTV.
It's all the same to me. Houzz, Pinterest, Instagram... all just internet manifestations of the same aspirational aesthetic promoted by however many dozens of unrealistic home renovation charlatans on HGTV et al.
