A project team lead by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), nARCHITECTS, Perkins Eastman, and W Architecture and Landscape Architecture has unveiled renderings for a new economic hub slated for the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn.
The so-called Made in NY (MiNY) campus is on tap to bring 200,000 square feet of renovated garment industry workspaces to the Bush Terminal district located on South Brooklyn's East River waterfront. The facilities will allow New York's thriving garment industry to retain a foothold in the city close to housing that is affordable to garment workers. Industrial facilities will include spaces for garment manufacturing and film and media production, as well as 5.6 acres of landscaped and public spaces.
“The new Made in New York Campus brings exciting opportunities to the Sunset Park community – providing affordable workspace for innovative and sustainable companies while also creating good jobs for local residents,” said Jhaelen Hernandez-Eli, NYCEDC Senior Vice President and Department Head of Design and Construction. “I’m excited to share our vision for the new campus today, and would like to thank nARCHITECTS and W Architecture and Landscape Architecture for their efforts on a project that weaves the historical fabric of the garment industry into a vibrant and interactive job center in Sunset Park."
The project adaptively reuses two city-owned masonry buildings with the aim of converting the brick structures into state-of-the-art industrial hubs that connect to surrounding areas via generous public space connections, including a kid-friendly splash pad. For the project, nARCHITECTS and Perkins Eastman are tacking the adaptive reuse component while W Architecture & Landscape Architecture is overseeing the interstitial elements of the design.
“We are thrilled to contribute to the City’s efforts to support the garment industry,” said Mimi Hoang, Co-Founding Principal, nARCHITECTS, who added, “with innovative design that incorporates Bush Terminal’s historical past, we are developing forward-looking, new manufacturing spaces for the Made in NY campus.”
Barbara Wilks, Founding Principal, W Architecture and Landscape Architecture, commented on the project as well, saying, “As landscape architects, we are pleased to be part of the team which will open this significant historic campus to the public and create a more sustainable, and accessible waterfront in Brooklyn."
The project includes the construction of a new 100,000 square foot state-of-the-art film and television production facility, among its many features.
The MiNY Campus at Bush Terminal is slated to open for business in the Spring of 2021.
