The budget committee of Germany’s lower house of parliament yesterday approved additional funding for Berlin’s planned Museum of the 20th Century, designed by the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, after estimates for the construction costs spiralled to €364m from €200m. — The Art Newspaper
According to The Art Newspaper, the new Herzog & de Meuron-designed museum in Berlin's central Kulturforum arts district is needed because "the Neue Nationalgalerie can only display about a quarter of Berlin’s vast stores of 20th-century art at any given time."

wait a second.... a HdM project that has drastically gone over budget??
Why these two posers are still getting commissions is beyond me.
Aside from the obvious sacrilege of developing the site adjacent to Mies' fabulous Neue Nationalgalerie.
there is a reason for the increase. Doesn't appear to be controversial.
Your perspective is wrong Miles, they aren't building next to the Mies, they are building next to the Scharoun (Ok, AND mies too). Their design is a bit stodgy in comparison to both of them really.
I've seen only a handful of their buildings in person. All of them are extremely well built and exemplary, if mildly taciturn. I expect this one will be just as well executed. The concept that anyone thinks they are posers is baffling.
My perspective i wrong because it is different from yours. LOL
Textbook example of the "I know you are but what am I" argument in architecture.
These posers designed the Parrish Art Museum here in Paradise. Largely dysfunctional from an operative perspective based on staff comments. Basically a bunch of rich NY housewives on the board picked them because they have a Pritzker you know. And there aren’t any competent architects in NY let alone the US.
I believe you. Doesnt make them posers. Haven't been to Parrish yet. I wrote that I had seen a handful of their buildings, but I guess it is closer to a dozen...with 2 of them in Tokyo, one of which is a fucking masterpiece, and a part of my daily life. It never disappoints. The point about Mies was tongue in cheek. I just find it funny that Mies is given such status when there is an equally important, and amazingly sculptural, building also beside the new museum. They could have gone for the Scharoun look and been just as contextual, instead they did something non controversial and probably very nice. Like much of their work, in fact. Not much posing, or even posturing, going on with this project...
“Posers” is used in reference to the quality of their designs: showy, pretentious, and without regard for function and budget. Not to mention completely lacking sustainable features, a basic requirement in this day and age.
