Fueled by a strong corporate presence—Amazon, Costco, Microsoft, Starbucks, Zillow and others have their headquarters in the area—and supported by a cluster of higher educational institutions like the University of Washington, Seattle is surging in more ways than one.
Currently home to 4 million people, the Seattle metropolitan region is set to grow to 6 million by 2050, an increase of about 55,000 per year, according to recent estimates reported by the Puget Sound Regional Council. The projected growth could totally re-shape the area’s built environment, as a series of regional transportation initiatives and land-use reforms that have recently begun to take shape aim to densify, diversify, and modernize the Pacific Northwest’s marquee metropolis.
With new housing construction taking off, institutional clients expanding, and a seemingly insatiable office market surging, for the area’s architecture firms, the region’s potential growth means one thing: More work and lots of it.
Over the next month, Archinect will set its Spotlight on Seattle in order to delve into some of the critical changes that are taking shape across the city by profiling some of the key players and architecture firms working there, while also highlighting emerging trends in education, design, and construction via our Job Board, Deans List, Studio Snapshot, Fellow Fellows series.
To get started, here are a few links to recent Archinect stories covering the goings-on across the region:
