NCARB's back to school tips for architecture students
As the semester steadily progresses forward, NCARB has provided architecture students with a couple of tips to help capitalize on the new school year. Below are 7 quick points from NCARB:
- Start your NCARB Record. Logging experience hours toward the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) is an essential step in the path to licensure. An NCARB Record allows you to begin logging hours. It can be established at my.ncarb.org.
- Report summer experience. Many students participated in internships and other architectural work over the summer. Don't forget to report those hours!
- Find your licensing advisor. According to NCARB, all NAAB accredited architecture programs are required to have an architect licensing advisor who can help explain the ins and ours of your education, experience, and examination requirements.
- Network and volunteer. Volunteering is a great option for networking and it avoids the awkward cocktail hours and small talk. Additionally, a lot of volunteer work can count toward your AXP hours.
- Don't forget to log your academic internship hours. NCARB offers credit for paid academic internships. Be sure to report those hours.
- Look for other experience opportunities. There are many ways to earn AXP hours outside of a traditional firm setting. NCARB lists design competitions, site visits, AIA continuing education, and volunteer work as some options.
- Check your state's requirements. Each state has its own unique requirements for becoming an architect. Check yours using the NCARB Licensing Requirement Tool.
