On April 1st, the architecture community lost the acclaimed architect, curator, and friend Francois Perrin. Having been diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer in January, 2019, the beloved designer, surfer, and father passed peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by friends and loved ones in his private home in Los Angeles.
Perrin's long list of accolades pair with his passion for inventive design approaches, love of surfing, and his kind-hearted nature. A dear friend to many, the Paris-born architect spent his time working in Southern California and France. The founder of Air Architecture, Perrin studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts. With his father being a professor of sculpture, Perrin's interests in art and curation only added to the depth and vision of his multidisciplinary approach to architecture.
Friends and fellow colleagues remember and praise Perrin for his stylistic approaches to design that went beyond the senses. Paul Petrunia, Archinect's founder, remembers Francois fondly: "Beyond his own unique talent as an architect and curator, Francois was a true supporter and champion of architecture. He could rarely be seen without a huge smile on his face, always exuding sincere excitement for the success of his colleagues."
Of his most notable works, many will remember his project Air Houses: Design for a New Climate which made an appearance at the Chicago Architecture Biennial in 2017. An advocate for pushing the boundaries between architecture and the ecological needs of the built environment, Perrin used his architectural imagination and use of materials to create mesmerizing works.
A lover of the arts, his curatorial skill sets were implemented in several installations and group shows throughout Los Angeles. As a supporter of the Los Angeles art and architecture community, Perrin was a true community leader and activator. This weekend, two events will take place to honor Perrin's life and legacy in places he loved most, the land and the water. On Saturday, April 6th at 8am at Topanga Beach, a surfer's circle will be held that morning to honor his passing. On Sunday, April 7th from 2pm - 5pm a memorial is planned for Perrin at the MAK Center. Guests have been asked to wear navy to honor Perrin.
Perrin sadly leaves his partner of 4 years, Eviana and their 16-month-old-daughter Clarisse. A gofundme page has been established to assist with costs for outstanding medical expenses as well as supporting Clarisse's education and care.
