In the past — or in schools with higher proportions of white students — a student acting out might garner an intervention by their principal, or a concerned teacher’s phone call to parents. But today, throughout the US, discipline in many schools has become a matter of law enforcement, rather than education. In New York, the majority of school guards — 5,000 School Safety Agents patrolling 2,300 public and private schools — are civilians employed by the School Safety Division of the NYPD. — urbanomnibus.net
Out of fearful reaction to school shootings and other safety concerns, many school environments look and feel like prison to the students attending. Through an extensive background on how school design has gotten to this point, "Where School Meets Prison" examines the impact prison-like design has on students and argues damaging results of higher student arrest rates and discrimination.
With a strong police presence and physical security infrastructure, student Andrea Colon shares how school design can become a pipeline to prison.
All of the replies above make me furious. The entire point of civilization is to move *beyond* using uncivil ways to resolve conflict. Women have been doing this work for centuries and are always thwarted by men because men have traditionally had physical power. I am as skeptical about the rise of tech culture as anyone can be but: at least it shows that physical strength is no longer the only way to gain power. Intelligence, collaboration, and willingness to completely overthrow the "traditional" ways of doing things are what will win, eventually. The future is female.

I think we're getting to a point here in the U.S. that parents are just starting to see the negative effects of zero tolerance policies and the heavy security presence in schools. The fact that small town Texas school districts are considering bringing paid counselors back into the mix is a good sign.
will those counselors be armed?
Used to be when you got into a fight that settled the matter one way or the other and afterwards you tolerated or even became friends with your adversary.
Now the very instant that there is even a hint of confrontation police are called, lawyers retained, and lives are marred forever.
Progress as measured by zero-tolerance. Good vs. Evil, Right vs. Wrong, Left vs. Right. There is no in-between, no middle ground, no grey area. It's my way or the highway. You're either with us or against us.
The Age of Entitlement. May it pass quickly.
My neighbor is a teacher, I mentioned much the same thing. A quick fist fight usually settled things, sure we might get in trouble with the admins, but you generally wouldn't be suspended or otherwise given any extraordinary punishment. He said kids don't leave it at just bare knuckles, they're far more likely to bring weapons if it comes to blows. Don't know what happened, but the good old days of settling differences, or in my case, neutralizing bullies, with a fist fight seem to have been governed by societal rules that no longer exist.
So is it good or bad that societal rules solely allowing physical domination to determine superiority are over?
Normal socialization is being stunted. Good or bad is irrelevant. Boys fighting is part of nature. No more wrong than lion cubs wrestling around. When we artificially suppress a million years of biological socialization shit goes wrong. From what I’ve seen, the average 20yo circa 2018 is about as emotionally mature, strong headed, and independent as a 10 yo circa 1980. No surprise these youngsters get into college and demand the state replace the comfort and safety of their mother.

Jordan Peterson is making the most of his 15 minutes, isn't he?
Human nature denial is the lefts version of climate change denial.
So we should still be hunter / gatherers, then? We should stop all change in favor of our NATURE?
Hahaha, you sound like Cathy Newman in that Jordan Peterson interview. Was that intentional? I never said that we should be hunter gatherers. You also seem to assume that “civilization” is less brutal than “nature.” As far as I know things like genocide and nuclear war are products of human civilization and poorly developed understanding of human nature...
Thanks for confirming my suspicion of Jordan Peterson.
I don’t get your point? Do you not believe that millions of years of evolutionary biology plays a part in our social behavior and organization? It does. This is fact, not up for debate.
You can domesticate a cat to a degree, but put a mouse in the room and watch instinct take over. Not all too different with humans. Kids fighting is a natural thing. Ok, teach them not to, but it’s still going to happen. Calling the cops on 10 year olds for fighting is sick imo. Any teacher that does so isn’t fit for their job.
And I’m not saying to let out nature rule us...but denying its reality is a mistake...and dangerous...ask Einstein and Oppenheimer...
i'm 100% with donna on this one. 'a little fist fight' is NEVER okay. any act of physical violence is a slippery slope to 'a little school massacre' or 'a little nuclear war'.
