Foster + Partners' new Hong Kong luxury hotel, The Murray, is now fully open to the public. Formerly a 1970's government office building, the firm has transformed these 25 stories into a unique urban experience for visitors.
The Murray Building was originally constructed when urban planning revolved around cars, leaving the structure inaccessible to pedestrians.
One of the main goals in the building's transformation was to reconnect the structure at ground level with a new street front, transparent and open ground floor space, and enhanced landscaping of the surrounding grounds.
Visitors are now greeted by entering through grand, 3-story arches into the welcoming hotel lobby.
The guest rooms have been designed to compliment the strong geometry of the building's facade, with views of the Hong Kong skyline.
The rooftop has been transformed into a restaurant and bar that open onto a roof terrace with panoramic views of the city.
The luxury hotel also offers banquet halls, luxurious pools and spas, and exclusive hotel rooms.
The original architecture was a direct response to the climate of Hong Kong with windows recessed and orientated to avoid the harsh tropical sunlight—gaining it an Energy Efficient Building Award in 1994.
