Throughout 2017, many of architecture's most prestigious accolades went to a diverse group of architects who have long dedicated their work to inclusivity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustainability — all important qualities that are increasingly moving to the forefront of architectural practice and research. Moreover, highly anticipated competitions like MoMA PS1's Young Architects Program, the Wheelwright Prize, and the Fairy Tales competition hint at the ideas brewing in the minds of today's generation of designers.
Listed in no particular order, here's Archinect's 2017 round-up of the most shared and talked-about news of architects who won big.
Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem, Ramon Vilalta named 2017 Pritzker Prize Winners
RCR Arquitectes co-founders Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem, and Ramon Vilalta were collectively named the 2017 Pritzker laureates in March — marking the first time in Pritzker history that three architects have won. Their nearly three-decade commitment to creative vision and equal collaboration led the jury to select all three architects to win.
David Adjaye knighted by the Queen in annual New Year Honours
2017 started on a high note for David Adjaye, who was knighted by the Queen of England during this year's New Year Honours. "I see this not as a personal celebration, but as a celebration of the vast potential – and responsibility – for architecture to effect positive social change, that we as architects have to bring something positive to the world," Adjaye said in a statement.
Jenny E. Sabin is the winner of MoMA PS1's 2017 Young Architects Program
Jenny Sabin Studio's “Lumen” was the winning proposal for MoMA PS1's 2017 Young Architects Program. The outdoor installation, which garnered plenty of attention this summer, was a canopy of responsive tubular structures made from lightweight knitted fabric and photoluminescent textiles.
The 2017 winners of the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers
The Architectural League Prize carries a legacy in that many now-well-known architects received the award early in their careers. The 2017 winners include SPORTS, Jonathan Louie and Nicole McIntosh - Architecture Office, Kevin Hirth, Isabel Martínez Abascal and Alessandro Arienzo of LANZA Atelier, Michelle JaJa Chang, and Mustafa Faruki of theLab-lab for architecture — all architects to keep an eye on!
TU Delft wins overall for first phase of SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition
Seeing Hyperloop technology gradually come to life is always fascinating, especially when young students can contribute in its development. In the first phase of the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod competition in Hawthorne, California, the TU Delft team's pod scored the highest and won first in innovative design. The winners of the 2017 Fairy Tales Architecture Competition
Depicted as storybook-friendly illustrations, the Fairy Tales Architecture Competition submissions reflect on themes like real-life current events and issues as well as evergreen topics like the creative process, mundane everyday activities, and relatable human emotions. Jennifer Ly wins 2017 Rotch Travelling Scholarship
Foster + Partners designer Jennifer Ly won the 2016-17 Rotch Travelling Scholarship with her project “New Common” for Boston’s City Hall Plaza. Ly will receive $38,500 to fund at least six months of travel in the coming year.
Gabriela Carrillo was named the 2017 Architect of the Year, while Rozana Montiel received the £10,000 Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture. The jury commended Carrillo and Montiel for their commitment to sustainable and democratic practices with local communities throughout Mexico. Also worth mentioning: Denise Scott Brown was honored with the 2017 Jane Drew Prize.
Diébédo Francis Kéré announced as Brunner Prize winner by American Academy of Arts and Letters
In what has been an eventful 2017 for Diébédo Francis Kéré, the acclaimed Berlin and Gando-based architect was honored with the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture. Known for his socially driven and sustainable approach to architecture, Kéré was noted for the way he has developed "an elegant and resourceful language of building", as juror Billie Tsien described.
Toyo Ito wins 2017 UIA Gold Medal
For 2017, the International Union of Architects presented their highest honor, the UIA Gold Medal, to Toyo Ito. Awarded every three years, other UIA Gold Medalists include I.M. Pei, Alvaro Siza Vieira, Teodoro González de León, Tadao Ando, Renzo Piano, and Rafael Moneo, to name a few.
Samuel Bravo wins 2017 Wheelwright Prize
An alumnus of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, architect Samuel Bravo won Harvard GSD's 2017 Wheelwright Prize for his proposal, “Projectless: Architecture of Informal Settlements”. Bravo plans to travel to South America, Africa, and Asia to engage with communities who live in various informal settlements or are experiencing rapid urban population growth.
