It's back to the grind with a new season of architecture and design events in New York City. As always, the city is abuzz with creative folks expanding the possibilities of how architectural design and practice can be reinterpreted, bringing attention to what in the urban environment is constantly overlooked. For anyone curious about what local happenings to fit into your weekly schedules, Archinect and Bustler have compiled a snappy list of events around town that are worth checking out.

Work in Progress | September 27, recommended by Paul Petrunia

On Tuesday, September 27th, a green construction fence will close Storefront for Art and Architecture and a LL47 sign will illustrate its future development. On the new walls, over 25 LL47 signs commissioned to artists, designers, and architects will depict alternative visions of ongoing construction sites throughout New York City, offering a space of reflection and critique of current development practices and the architectures that build them. A photographic survey of works in progress throughout the city, will depict this new naturalized green New York landscape, inviting us to think about the city that is growing with our times.

Drawing Sound III: Composing the City | September 28, recommended by Justine Testado

The Drawing Center will host the third installment of Drawing Sounds, led by Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky. Fusing contemporary architecture and music, the night starts with Miller and composer David Lang in conversation with Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Daniel Libeskind. Artist Sougwen Chung will present her drawings of “remixed” architectural plans, and then Paul Miller will perform Ordos 100 REMIX — a “reinterpretation of Ai Weiwei's collaboration with Herzog & de Meuron”. Tickets are sold out online, but a limited number of tickets will be available at the door on event night. Arrive early!

Beaux Arts Ball 2016: Tabula Rasa | September 30, recommended by Alexander Walter

Let's get fancy and put on those dancing shoes — ArchLeague’s big annual Beaux Arts Ball is coming up again! (Wait...has it already been one year again??) The theme this time around is Tabula Rasa, so ditch those old ways and prepare for fresh thinking and a healthy dose of innovation. Hurry though, and get your tickets now.

By The People: Designing A Better America | Opening on September 30, recommended by Amelia Taylor-Hochberg

The product of over two years of research, this exhibition showcases design projects from all throughout the U.S. that address issues of social and economic inequality. An important reminder of the unique skill-set that architects have to address poverty-stricken and shrinking cities.
