On the cusp of SCI-Arc’s first semester implementing its new EDGE Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture program, Director Hernan Diaz Alonso has named David Ruy as chair.
SCI-Arc first announced it was launching EDGE in November of last year, offering “four graduate degree programs in fields including architectural technologies, fiction and entertainment, design of cities, and design theory and pedagogy”. Respectively, those translate into an MS in Architectural Technologies (Marcelo Spina), an MS in the Design of Cities (Peter Trummer), an MA in Fiction and Entertainment (Liam Young), and a MS in Design Theory and Pedagogy (David Ruy). The first two degrees are based on preexisting SCI-Arc programs, while the second two are new.
The earlier press released issued by SCI-Arc on November 10 of 2015 named Ruy as EDGE's Chair, but this was later changed to only refer to Ruy as leading the MS in Design Theory and Pedagogy. Commenting on this update on November 11, user ARP1 asked "Why did they edit this? SciArc getting cold feet?" after praising Ruy: "David Ruy is one of the most brilliant architects alive today. [...] SciArc is so lucky." As of this news posting, SCI-Arc has not responded to inquiries as to why this change was made.
Aside from his work at SCI-Arc, Ruy is co-director with Karel Klein of the practice Ruy Klein, based in New York City. The firm, according to its website, “examines contemporary design problems at the intersection of architecture, nature, and technology.”
Update (8/18/2016): SCI-Arc Director Hernan Diaz Alonso has responded to our inquiry about why Ruy's announced appointment in November was changed: "We had to delay David’s appointment due to his previous commitments. I’m thrilled and excited that we can now officially announce that David is joining SCI-Arc and the LA architecture community, the wait was worth it."

Congratulations Prof. Ruy!
Just to be clear re: 8/18/2016 update from Director Alonso, is confirmation that Ruy as both EDGE's Chair and leader of the MS in Design Theory and Pedagogy?
@Nam – yep, he's both now.
Congrats!
