It's been a strange week. With London still in shocked disbelief after the referendum result, it’s probably better to channel our energy into something a bit more positive, and to focus on what can be created in our vibrant city. The week ahead holds lots of community based events, focused on bringing people together and creating all-inclusive developments and spaces. As an ongoing theme in London's architecture circles, the importance of community is central to any good proposal or idea.
It is also worth noting that many degree shows are still open, and their optimistic design and positive energy is not only refreshing, but what I feel everyone needs a bit of right now.
Check back regularly to keep up to date with the city’s latest happenings and our weekly recommendations!
What is Community? Powered by PechaKucha | June 28
This event is a great opportunity to hear about ideas surrounding community improvement in a light-hearted setting. Hosted by the NLA and Bespoke, it is sure to be a fantastic night. Unfamiliar with the format? PechaKucha talks are popular within universities and the design field, known for their snappy pace and audience engagement. Meaning ‘chit-chat’ Japanese, PechaKucha lends its name and mannerism to this event whereby speakers must adhere to a strict time rule; 20 slides, each on screen for just 20 seconds. This rapid pace creates an atmosphere that feels upbeat, fresh and exciting.
Listen to notable speakers, who have been actively involved in working with London communities to create well designed and informed spaces, with the view to improve our city. From the impressive Edible Bus Stop project to incredible community-centric practices; the guest speakers have done some impressive work.
Constructing Communities – Peckham Levels | Open now until June 30
Known for its famous bar, Franks, the multi-storey car park in the heart of the community is soon to be one of the hippest, most welcoming co-working spaces in London. The floors will be filled with workshops, studios and start-ups. The designs for these 'levels' are available for public viewing until the 30th June at the soon-to-be-developed car park and at RIBA's head quarters. The design principally aims tore-generate the multi-story car park, and to provide a new work place. In turn, this would add to Peckham's already buzzing and fresh community spirit.
“Drawn Together” competition | Registration/Submission deadline: July 2
An online submission of sketches run by Haptic architects looks at the characteristics of London's Urban realm, and is encouraging members of the design community and the public alike to submit their sketches of housing concepts. The project "emerged as a way of questioning whether there is an alternative approach to development in our great city, one that is more collaborative, tailor-made and individual."In this way, the project seeks to bring together the ideas of many, to create a solution which is 'open-source' and led by the potential inhabitants.
Published entries so far range from the fantastical to the traditional; from silly fun to considered design. The importance of collaboration is evident when consulting communities, and though this project isn’t a wholly new idea, it is the first I have seen that is not directly linked to a specific proposal or planning application.
Orbit Slide | Open now until August 31
Much anticipated is the opening of Anish Kapoor's towering 114.5-metre-high sculpture, not as the entertaining landmark of the Olympic park, but as the helter-skelter that its form so playful had always suggested. The first lucky participants were able to ride the exhilaratingly long slide last week, and it is now open to the public. The orbit tower has been described as many things; a treble clef, a hookah, and a “super-sized mutant trombone”. Kapoor's ideas behind the design was to represent instability and chaos; quite relevant for this summer perhaps? Bringing play back to the Olympic Park, visitors can now (for a fee) hurtle for 40 seconds down the world's largest slide, reaching speeds of 15 miles an hour as they twist and turn around the structure.
