John Baeder Book Signing - "Road Well Taken" | June 9, recommended by Justine Testado
Make a pitstop at Hennessy + Ingalls for a chance to meet photorealist painter John Baeder, who will be signing copies of his latest monograph “John Baeder's Road Well Taken” by Jay Williams. After leaving a lucrative advertising career in 1972 to fully pursue painting, Baeder traveled throughout the U.S. to capture nostalgic scenes of roadside diners before they disappeared. Perhaps this book could be a beautiful source of inspiration for that ’merican summer roadtrip you've been dreaming about.
After 5: DJ Son Zoo at Hauser Wirth & Schimmel | June 9, recommended by Amelia Taylor-Hochberg
Summer is here and the warm, light evenings are best enjoyed with good music, drink and inspiring art. Hosted by the freshly opened Hauser Wirth & Schimmel gallery in the Arts District (designed by Creative Space, Los Angeles, in consultation with Selldorf Architects), the free, weekly "After 5" event series is a great way to ease into your weekend early. This week's event features DJ Son Zoo, an arts programmer and collaborator with Metro Art Presents.
Poketo Workshop: Intro to Architecture with Wrk-Shp Studio | June 11, recommended by Nicholas Korody
"Have you ever walked into a building and wondered how it was designed?" the organizers of this Intro to Architecture workshop ask. Well, chances are that if you're reading this, the answer is yes (perhaps too many times). But your kid probably hasn't. Head over to this kid-friendly event to get a demo of CAD modeling and 3D printing.

Is “dramatic” design your thing? Don't miss out on legendary artist Gronk's Theater of Paint at the Craft and Folk Art Museum, his first solo exhibition in more than two decades. The exhibition showcases Gronk's vast work in theatrical set design, which spans over 40 years — including his time as a founding member of East L.A. art collective ASCO to his more recent opera productions with director Peter Sellars. Amid Gronk's original set pieces, site-specific paintings, photos, and other documentations of his past productions, visitors get to interact with the exhibition theater set using the artist's handmade props.
Also keep track of our weekly event picks for New York City and London.
