The Forum on European Culture, an initiative of DutchCulture and De Balie, is hosting "1 Night, 12 Hours, 100 Questions," a marathon of interviews centered around the question: What is Europe?
Moderated by Rem Koolhaas alongside political theorist Luuk van Middelaar and De Balie’s director Yoeri Albrecht, the form of the event, a part of the larger initiative #ReCreatingEurope, is inspired by Hans Ulrich Obrist's marathons held annually at the Serpentine Galleries. It's happening now.
The fate of the European Union, and the pan-European project in general, has never been so uncertain. Tensions are rising on the continent as an influx of refugees and the fallout from nearly a decade of austerity politics contribute to growing nationalist movements. In a few weeks, Britain will have a referendum to determine whether or not to stay within the Union. This context will likely background the 24-hour marathon.
The roster of interviewees includes: Inne Olders, Ingo Niermann, Joeri Jansen, Pieter Kool, Gerben Hellinga, Kishore Mahbubani, Rudi Fuchs, Ivana Abramovic, Wolfgang Tillmans, Flavia Kleiner, Beatrix Ruf, Engin Önder, Tom Lanoye, Vasyl Cherepanyn, Johan Simons, Abram de Swaan, Vincent Stuer, Philipp Blom, Phillip Blond, Luc Tuymans, Jan Raes, Chantal Mouffe, Costas Lapavitsas, Yevhen Levchenko, Larry Siedentop, Astrid du Lau d'Allemans, Lukasz Kolinski, Diederik Samsom, Quirijn Bolle, Aslı Çiçek, Ryan Heath, Ann Demeester, Heiko Goelzer, Niklas Maak, Duncan Stutterheim, Diederick Koopal, Peter Ho, Bettine Vriesekoop, and Abdelkader Benali.
