What I like and what I believe about those sketches and models is that they’re distillations of ideas ... They could become art installations, or they could become buildings. They’re sort of hybrid pieces in the world of visual ideas before they become buildings [...]
I always go see the site and try to discern what the energy, nature, and character of the place are—the possibilities of a place. Then I start drawing.

More from the Portland, OR and NYC-based firm:
Is Allied Works fundamentally different than a firm like BIG?
Davvid it is called "materials", often used to build buildings. that is the fundamental difference between BIG and Allied Works, a huge fucking difference.......now with regard to image making, well art exhibits from models are almost imagery like renderings .....
All the Allied Works projects I have visited have been excellent... same sense of ephemerality and manipulation of space you get from a project like Holl's Chapel of St. Ignatius.
Interesting that Architects based in the PNW tend to be some of my favorites and share a tectonic, materials-based approach to their work... Holl, Allied Works, Olson Kundig, even NBBJ to some extent.
I would add Patkau Architects, Works Progress Architecture and Cutler Anderson to the list of admirable PNW architects.
Clyfford Still Museum is awesome - totally blows the doors off of the Denver Art Museum. CAM in St. Louis was good, but it wasn't the Pulitzer (Ando) next door, so it suffered a bit with the comparison.

In almost every conceivable way. I say that as a big fan of both.

FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT FROM BIG
oh yea that image certainly is counter to image making
I have been looking forward to this exhibit and am planning on attending soon.

I think davvid IS Bjarke Ingels.
jla-x, Honestly, I don't even like BIG's architecture that much. I'm more fascinated with response that it gets for you guys (I'm guessing you're all guys) on this site. Maybe its because it seems like obvious hypocrisy.
I don't see how it's hypocrisy.

I have a lot of admiration for the firm. Even the unbuilt work is presented with beautiful sculpture-like models. The Museum of Art and Design in NYC is somewhat disappointing though.
