While Thomas Heatherwick's proposed Garden Bridge hasn't attracted universal acclaim, it has spurred an unusual competition. A purposefully free-to-enter satirical contest known as "A Folly for London" encouraged anyone and everyone to submit "absurd, illogical, egotistic and obtrusive designs for the public green space on London’s South Bank which would be sacrificed for The Garden Bridge." Judged by Green Party leader Natalie Bennett, journalist Owen Hatherley and political cartoonist Martin Rowson, the overall winner, "Green Fire of London" is a perennial flame fueled by trees culled from London's parks to "free up vast tracts of new land for developers to use for luxury constructions." It beat out entries in a variety of categories, including Absurd Transport Infrastructure, Priapic Humour, and Greenwash.
Some of the honorable mentions, including "Jesus Square & Bridge" took a subtler approach, proposing the construction of an underwater bridge that would allow any species walking across it to "become god in London."
Runner-up "Floating Tidal Exploded Bus Maze" cheekily combines a prototypical London maze design and Heatherwick's Routemaster Bus design to create a completely useless, if mesmerizingly red, transit swamp.
"Huge Cake," much like "The Fairy Mushroom," treads the WYSIWYG territory of satirical urban design, proposing either an enormous confection or fungi on the Thames. In a similar larger-than-life vein, the Priapic Humour honorable mentions included "Scrotopolis" which literally is a load of bollocks.
