Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) well known for its progressive curriculum, and singular focus on architecture is accepting applications from prospective students of all non-architectural backgrounds. The degree program, M.Arch 1, and summer program, Making + Meaning, specialize in providing architectural education to students entering the profession for the first time.
M.Arch 1 is a three-year professional, Master of Architecture degree accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board and open to applicants who hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent in any field of study. The program prepares students for the professional practice of architecture through emphasis on learning through making and implementation of digital technologies. By linking each semester’s architecture design studio with courses in visual, cultural and applied studies, students are offered instruction in the depth of the relationship between architecture and technological advances, representation, and social change. With each progressive semester increasing in sophistication, students acquire a unique ability to address a breadth of complex architectural issues while testing their own intellectual and design convictions. M.Arch 1 graduates work in such architecture firms as; Gensler, Gehry Partners, Perkins+Will, Morphosis and Zaha Hadid Architects. Graduates have also pursued careers in Product Design, Entertainment, Urban Design, and Education. To click here to learn more about SCI-Arc’s M.Arch 1 program.
MAKING+MEANING is a five-week summer studio program for individuals looking to both expand the breadth of their knowledge of architecture, immerse themselves in the school’s community and considering whether to pursue a graduate degree in the field. With a faculty to student ratio of 1:12, the program introduces the principles of architecture through a hands-on transformation of form, scale and space. Fundamental design methods are presented in two simultaneous modules: Design Laboratory and Visual Studies. The Design Laboratory exposes students to various design strategies while experimenting with different materials. The Visual Studies module explores diverse modes of representation, ranging from gesture drawing to descriptive geometry and 3D scanning. The studio work is supported by a range of seminars surveying the latest developments in materials and fabrication technologies. Making + Meaning alumni have subsequently pursued graduate studies at SCI-Arc, UCLA, Columbia University, and Harvard’s GSD, to name a few.
