Richard Serra’s new sculpture, 'East-West/West-East,' is a set of four standing steel plates rolled in Germany, shipped via Antwerp, and offloaded, trucked, and craned into place in the middle of the western Qatari desert...the steel is the same that he’s used in his other pieces, and it will oxidize in the same way, albeit more quickly in the hot, salty conditions of the Brouq Nature Reserve. The plates will [ultimately] turn a dark amber—approximately the same color...as the Seagram Building. — The New Yorker

Is this his equivalent of Metallica's black album...
If that is a reference to them going mainstream making garbage music, then I agree completely. It is punk equivalent of pop-punk.
naw, he's just fuckin with the aliens.
I wonder how many migrants died or semi-died trying to erect this "sculpture"
Why didn't you just write "think of the children!"?
The Great Wall of China means in Traflamadorian, when viewed from above:”Be patient. We haven’t forgotten about you.”
The Golden House of the Roman Emperor Nero meant: “We are doing the best we can.”
The meaning of the Moscow Kremlin when it was first walled was: “You will be on your way before you know it.”
The meaning of the Palace of theLeague of Nations inGeneva,Switzerland, is: “Pack up your things and be ready to leave on short notice." (Vonnegut)
The meaning of the Richard Serra Qatari Sculptures is "Forget it, stay there, those earthlings are out of oil."
Does it provide any shade from the hot sun to the roaming camels and Bedouins? Sir, you are no where near I.M. Pei's concept, function or design for living things, sorry.
Madigan, you raise a good point, but what I.M. Pei project are you referring to?
You are not trying to "SINK" me, are you?lol
"I asked Serra the day before the piece débuted about what effect this enormous investment has had on his work. He told me that the Qataris have given him the opportunity to work in his own time on gigantic projects that he couldn't possibly have conceived of anywhere else. He said that his focus is not on the political and sociological aspects of the country but, rather, on his own projects: “You know, I come here and work. That’s what I do.”"
This is why Communists succeeded in making a mockery of Marxism. Or am I missing something?
Baked by Kubrick in 1968.
The only unfortunate thing about this (not that it matters) is that Serra was one of the few startists (yes i just made that word up) that I respected...
One day an angry group of gorillas will break bones in front of them, It could be next year if Saudis invade.
I like it. Y'all are cynical as hell.
I guess this and aravena's project will have to wait until the new overlords decide.
