Islamic State militants ransacked Mosul’s central museum, destroying priceless artefacts that are thousands of years old, in the group’s latest rampage which threatens to upend millennia of coexistence in the Middle East.
The destruction of statues and artefacts that date from the Assyrian and Akkadian empires, revealed in a video published by Isis on Thursday, drew ire from the international community and condemnation by activists and minorities that have been attacked by the group.

These bastards are destroying the relics of the very religion they claim to be custodians of.
it's my understanding they're destroying assyrian relics. i kind of hope they anger the assyrian gods enough that they come back and start smiting some shit. gods of ancient pantheonic religions can come back right?
what a bunch of assholes.
These people are insane.
Thayer-D you're right, they are insane.
These people do not speak for anything but ignorance and absolute hate. They do not belong to any religion and they do not speak on behalf of any country, race, or religious beliefs.
They simply stand alone, and we the rest of the world stand together.
When I viewed this video it truly hurt me but then I came to the realization that it shows nothing of human evidence, it's pure animalistic behavior that one can not rationalize.
a few weeks ago a friend said -
Why does everyone think ISIS has something to do with Islam?
I said - It's in the name.
He said - what about the KKK? Aren't they proclaimed Christians.
I said - it stands for Ku Klux Klan, says nothing about Christianity. The media is the problem here aren't they?
I wonder if any of those artifacts will be burned alive....
Well I just bought a half dozen books onolder Islamic Architecture so at least I have the images to look at. Not suprisingly, a few of the buildings have been destoyed since the books were published in the 60s and 70s.
Fortunately, experts state that most (if not all) of these relics are replicas...
... according to archaeologists, most if not all the statues in the Mosul museum are replicas not originals. The reason they crumble so easily is that they're made of plaster.
"You can see iron bars inside," pointed out Mark Altaweel of the Institute of Archaeology at University College, London, as we watched the video together. "The originals don't have iron bars." - Channel 4
