At a hearing earlier today, Los Angeles’ Culture Heritage Commission voted to consider granting Historic-Cultural Monument status to Norms Coffee Shop on La Cienega. This would protect the iconic building in the Googie modern style until a final decision is made by the commission. According to the Los Angeles Conservancy, the new owners of Norms were issued a demolition permit on January 5, triggering a wave of outrage from architectural preservationists. — hyperallergic.com

Better move fast before Thom Mayne tears it down!
this is where eric chavkin and i go to for steak and eggs and coffee and talk about architecture, films, stories. eric and i have been going to various norms since the early 80's. sometimes glen small and other friends join us. always a great place to talk about arts. spent many thanksgivings there. in santa monica location, there were late night counter regulars, mainly writers including oliver stone when we were all night-ing architecture students in nearby sci arc. it was the home of 99 cent breakfasts which included eggs, sausages, hash brown potatoes and endless coffee, you could chain smoke cigarettes too. Is the food great at norms? i only eat breakfast there. but it is always plenty on the plate. home of the "bigger and better" breakfast. denny's is just a frigid and large corporate wanna be of norms.
skyrocketing land values are fucking up our cities and cultural capital.
I love this googie stuff. Very accessible and very optimistic. It seems like a true vernacular of the LA scene, but sadly, the culture doesn't seem to value much of anything from the past.
