Monica Ponce de Leon, a leading American architect proud of being a Hispanic woman in a field long dominated by white men, wants to change the face of her profession.
[...] agreed to conduct a class earlier that day for juniors from John Hay High School - the vast majority of whom were black.
Ponce de Leon, dean of the Taubman College of Architecture and Planning [...], wanted to inspire the students to enter a field in which the vast majority of practitioners don't look like them.

this is actually two challenges - making this profession more diverse, and making the field more accessible to people from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Just making it through college is going to be tough for these kids - not that they can't handle the work - but there's this period of disillusionment when you get to college and you realize that your peers aren't any smarter than the kids you went to HS with - just richer - especially true if you're majoring in architecture.
I'll make sure my transferring students apply to the Taubman College of Architecture and Planning from East Los Angeles College.
I definitely agree with her as I am teaching architecture to minority immigrant kids. There is a lot more to be said on this subject.
toaster, couldnt agree more. ive said it before and ill say it again, if this profession favors privilage dont be surprised when it has similat demographics as the privilged. the narrow path to licensure is the reason why this profession is dominated by white males.
What is the tuition for 6 years of architecture school nowadays?
I would encourage minority students to be doctors and lawyers before being indebted architecture graduates.

Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal with the things they do, cause hate in your heart will consume you too.
