IKEA has a little known secret: the company is a non-profit. Ingvar Kamprad the founder of IKEA created the philanthropic Stichting Ingka Foundation whose mission is to “further the advancement of interior design.” IKEA’s bizarre business model looks like this: the nonprofit Stichting Ingka owns a private Dutch Company, Ingka Holdings that owns the majority of individual stores at the franchise level. — onlinemba.com

at a fundamental level, choosing to become a "non-profit" is really just a tax decision. it's a huge one, to be sure, but the primary difference would be in how they distribute profits from the company.
now, if (as that article implies), they've set up a labyrinth of side companies to help shield their profits on taxes... well.. i'm not a tax attorney. it still seems like the end vehicle - the one who holds the trademarks and gets paid - is still going to be taxed on the profits from that license agreement. no?
