• Families Removed From 'Tower of David' Skyscraper Slum: Venezuelans initially began living in the abandoned office towers in 2007, due to the country's burgeoning financial crisis. They are now being evicted by Caracas city officials, citing safety concerns in the 45-floor building.

• Row over Olympic cauldron design settled out of court: Olympic officials settled with designers from Atopia, who claimed the cauldron design relied heavily on their ideas without citation. While Atopia's influence has been recognized, design of the cauldron is still credited to Thomas Heatherwick.

Thursday, July 24

• Álvaro Siza donates his architectural archives to institutions in Portugal and Canada: The archive will be divided up between the Canadian Centre for Architecture (Montreal), the Fundação Gulbenkian in Lisbon and the Fundação de Serralves in Porto.
• Can a Frank Gehry design help change the dynamic of Watts?: Gehry Partners signs on to build the campus for Children’s Institute, Inc., a nonprofit that runs family social services in Watts, California.
• Anti-Surveillance Camouflage for Your Face: Associate editor for The Atlantic Robinson Meyer runs an informal social experiment while “undercover” in CV dazzle makeup on the streets of DC.

Wednesday, July 23

• Two new films showcase Steven Holl's addition to the Glasgow School of Art:  Architectural filmmakers Spirit of Space released two films showcasing Steven Holl Architects' Reid Building, an addition to the Glasgow School of Art that opened in April of this year. The gigantic building was designed to complement the School’s Mackintosh library, an original modern masterpiece that had suffered significant damage from a fire just weeks after Reid’s opening.
• Architecture Billings Index increased in June: June was a good month for the Architecture Billings Index, seeing an increase in both design activity and the new project index.

Tuesday, July 22

• UK contributes £10m to Glasgow School of Art, half for Mackintosh restoration: The UK is increasing its funding to Glasgow’s life sciences, business and arts sectors, passing a chunk of that change specifically to the Glasgow School of Art. The money should help support restoration efforts of the Mackintosh Library, which was significantly damaged by a fire that broke out at the school last May.
• Tale of Two Cities: NYC approves ‘poor door’ for luxury high-rise: Designers of a new NYC high-rise proposed that their building have separate entrances for its “affordable housing” units and its other rentals. Their controversial proposal was approved by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, under the justification that the affordable housing units substantiate an entirely separate property within the greater high-rise. Such segregated entrances exist in other Manhattan properties, but the proposal received so much flack that more of this kind are unlikely to pass.
• Airbnb host forced to evict squatter in Palm Springs rental: A 30+ day stay in a Palm Springs condo turned into eviction proceedings when an Airbnb renter refused to leave.

Monday, July 21

• How the “Six Californias” Plan Threatens California’s Transportation Future: A San Francisco venture capitalist (who else) proposed a drastic fix to California’s economic woes, by splitting the state up into six different “states” by county. The new borders would segregate Silicon Valley and break apart California’s statewide water, transportation, and public university systems. Organizers are currently collecting signatures to put the proposal to a statewide vote in 2016.
• US museums provide emergency support for Syria: Art and heritage experts from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, and the Pennsylvania Museum’s Penn Cultural Heritage Center are working with Syrian colleagues to preserve “high-risk” collections in the warring country. • Herman Miller Buys DWR for $154 Million. What Does That Mean for Chairs?: Midcentury-design powerhouse Herman Miller acquired contemporary housewares retailer, Design Within Reach, consolidating furnishings giants in both the office and home markets.
