Opening the Nest platform to outside developers will allow Google to move into the emerging market for connected, smart home devices. Experts expect that this so-called "Internet of Things" phenomenon will change the way people use technology in much the same way that smartphones have changed life since the introduction of Apple's iPhone seven years ago. — CBS News

i'm actually quite excited to see this develop. i think the camera/security thing is probably going to push it forward a bit. who doesn't sit at work and wonder if their dog actually invited neighbor dogs over for poker? now you can watch and find out.
from your article toaster: "Downstairs, lights come up, illuminating a split-level kitchen and living room." i hardly think a split-level house could be considered smart, so they were probably using a bad example. maybe that's just a personal bias. hard to tell.
where i really think smart homes can benefit is if they can automatically open windows. for passive cooling to work, you probably need to open a bunch of windows on one side of the house on the first floor and the other side of the house on the second floor. i think most people expect to get the same advantage from opening the closest window, but that typically yields less beneficial results.
