Architect Peter Zumthor has dramatically revised his design for a new Los Angeles County Museum of Art, creating a new bridge-like section of the building that would span Wilshire Boulevard.
The new design is meant to address concerns that the original plan would encroach on, and potentially damage, the La Brea Tar Pits at the neighboring Page Museum, casting a shadow over the largest pit.

BUILD THIS IMMEDIATELY!
k thks
In plan view, I very much prefer this proposal to the original.
This project just got awesome quickly. Zumthor + LA = A+
what was that about modernism not being contextual? Thanks, bye.
Do you think they would have allowed the bridge over the street in an initial submission? That seems like one of those great "I can't believe I'm getting away with this" kinds of things. But if that was the first proposal, do you think there would have been a huge outcry against it that would have prevented it?
Darkman...what exactly is "contextural" about this scheme?
Tar, baby
Who knew context was even a consideration for modernism? Next thing they'll be talking about pedestrian scale and the play of light and shadow. This building brings to mind the limits of "concept driven" architecture and how it relys on the one big idea at the expense of the many other ways architecture can speak to one. The difference between the first and second plan shows how irrelevant the plan actually is. They could have spooged it any which way. The bid idea is bold and in your face, but all else is secondary. It assumes that you will either take this building in on its own terms or you get nothing.

re: context a la Hawthorne "a building spanning one of the world's most famous boulevards instead of a museum wing on an open" this engagement with the Blvd, especially in a city such as LA long associated with roads, driving, cars etc.
