The project is aware of the strength and the lyrical iconography of the monuments on the Acropolis of Athens and its main aim is not to alter the perception of the volumes. For this purpose it has been taken the theory of composition of the visual axes exposed by Doxiadis and place the new construction in the “twilight zone” created by the Parthenon.
The choice of the area in which to place the new building is the South Eastern area of the acropolis. Another reason to place the museum here is because in this area there is no rock but fill soil. Despite the new construction is developed underground, does not affect in any way the natural morphology of the bedrock that forms the base of the buildings of the Acropolis.
The project also includes the reorganization of routes and paths inside the Acropolis, that nowadays do not respond to the needs of usability and comfort. Always without altering the fundamental characteristic of the area, which is the freedom of walking and the fluidity of the space that clashes only with the monuments “scattered” in an area with no clearly defined hierarchies.
The museum was conceived with the possibility of having a double route. The entrance and the exit of the museum are interchangeable and practicable according to the convenience of the visitor. However, there is a preferred direction to better understand the Acropolis and the monuments that creates the ensamble, this would be getting in from the south side of the Parthenon.
The museum building comprises four juxtaposed elongated bands that define certain areas of the museum: the south end is the one with offices to manage museum, a bookshop that is directly connected for both an inside and outside path, one restaurant and a conference room.
It is in the central strips where the museum is placed. Finally the last one it is an exit ramp that guides the visitor directly to the square in front the main entrance of the Pantheon, which was for the ancient Greeks the main entrance to the temple.
