The King Kalakaua Post Office is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and was built in 1921 when Hawaii was still a territory of the United States. Over a hundred years old, this Spanish-Mission Style structure is undergoing a renovation to repair the rust and water infiltration and cracking of the stucco surface. The solution to this problem involves roofs repairs and the installation of zinc cathodes to slow down the continued degradation and rusting of the steel members in the columns. 

Replacement of the chillers within the tower is another part of the upgrades with involved creating a floor slope and floor drains, using a felt back membrane system for waterproofing the floor and removing unnecessary elements in a high-mold growth environment. We used natural ventilation to cool the chillers to prevent mold growth. We also hired a concrete analyst to scan and selectively demolish the concrete floor to check rebar locations and floor thickness. More recently, we had an emergency repair project caused by a 100-year old palm tree that fell on the roof of the post office. Working with the contractor, we conducted selective demolition to understand the extent of damage to the concrete roof and eaves.
