19 new artist live/work units inhabit the former “dog pound” site situated at 2013 Second Street in Berkeley. The 4-story building utilizes exposed wood beams and a pattern of varied corrugated metal siding to draw upon the industrial warehouse character of the surrounding neighborhood. The nearby Amtrak railroad, (present and historic) Bay shoreline, and I-80 Freeway are each depicted in a ground-level perforated screen divvied up by a street grid of metal flat bar and rod. Meanwhile, an array of vibrant and colorful polycarbonate panels above, hint at the imagination of the artist residents creating inside. Inhabitants looking for a creative stimuli or break from making, may retreat to the 2,000 square foot courtyard within.
