Hey Hey Canteen is an Asian comfort food restaurant located in Gowanus. The renovation aimed to create a space that was consistent with the food -- natural, textured, and delightful. The existing space had rough brick walls and smooth concrete floors. The design maintains those textures and adds wood with three different treatments– solid natural white oak tables, ebony stained seating
benches/serving counters and white stained ceiling boards. I designed, prototyped, and installed a black rope installation that animates the space as the only source of decoration. Inexpensive fluorescent strip lights are installed on a diagonal through the space and covered with a gel that modulates the light.
