Coney Island Brewery Bar & Restaurant

JLGA designed the original Coney Island Brewery in 2015, and in 2019, Boston Beer Company invited JLGA to design a new, 4,700 SF bar in the adjacent space. The client envisioned a design inspired by Coney Island’s seaside location and colorful history: from the neon signs, famous eateries, game booths, and the carnival atmosphere of the iconic boardwalk, to the kaleidoscopically zany Mermaid Parade.

JLGA’s design preserves the functioning brewery while creating two new signature bars. The Mermaid Bar connects to the brewery spatially and through color, finishes, and details. A blue-and-white tile wall draws its inspiration from a mermaid’s shimmering, scaled tail. A bright, custom-designed neon sign announces Coney Island Brewery across the interior to the street, and pays homage to the vintage signs that define scores of Coney Island boardwalk shops and storefronts.

The Mosaic Bar features a standing bar area, lounge seating, and a striking “instagrammable” mural wall painted by a local artist. A mosaic tile wall, reminiscent of old NYC subway stations, spells out “Coney Island.” The brewery and bar include an open, multipurpose space for private events and parties, as well as gaming areas, restrooms, and support spaces like a rentable kitchen, admin offices, and storage space.
