Safe Childhoods

Safe childhoods is a charity working within Indonesia to rescue and care for abused children. They are currently working towards creating ‘The Sanctuary’, a small Eco village in a remote area of Bali.  The Eco village (built from recycled wood, bamboo and other environmentally friendly materials) will include 5-6 traditional wooden houses for the children to live in, 3 small staff houses, a school, a therapy studio, a workshop, a medical clinic, a large communal living room and kitchen, and extensive gardens incorporating organic vegetable plots, wild flower and herbal gardens, space for mediation, and play areas. It is envisaged that over time the complex will be able to house and support up to 30 children and 25 staff. The central philosophy is that a gentle loving community and a close connection with nature can heal some of the deepest wounds (physical, psychological and spiritual).

The site is set on a hillside plateau overlooking stunning natural scenery. Buildings are orientated to this and set in a way to provide a communal and integrated layout. Many of the buildings have been donated or acquired through charity schemes and therefore require renovation and improvement on limited budgets. Other buildings will be bespoke and offer ways to create specialised spaces.

At the centre of the site, a main building for gathering and group activities will be situated, providing open views throughout the site.
