The Kira

Located across the street from a Romanesque style church and next to a Gothic Revival style church, the Kira’s modern design provides a refreshing visual contrast. The building’s design operates on three different scales - pedestrian, building, and urban. Ironspot charcoal colored brick forms an intricate pattern which is offset by smooth metal panels on the building’s lower façade. The design establishes the ground through third floor as a separate shape and creates an engaging pedestrian experience. Inspired by musical composition, a syncopated rhythm of residential windows is accented by buff grey brick above the fourth floor. The juxtaposition of the Kira’s design alongside its historic neighbors provides a visually engaging streetscape along Jamaica Avenue.

Part of downtown Jamaica’s urban renewal efforts, the Kira’s sustainable design solution will impact both the aesthetic and social aspects of the community. The 21-story mixed-use building includes an extensive community space with landscaped outdoor terrace, fitness center, children’s playroom, and laundry facilities located on each floor. Of the 139 housing units, 69 are designated to survivors of domestic violence. New Destiny Housing provides on-site supportive services.
