Balch & Egan Joint-Use Gyms

The City of Los Altos and Los Altos School District constructed joint-use gyms at their two junior high schools. They are used for school and after-school athletics, and by community and adult leagues after school hours and on weekends. They share a common prototype, with lobbies and site work adjusted for the different sites. They are full-size, competition basketball gyms with sprung maple floors and bleachers. School locker and restroom facilities are used for both school and community programs. A prefabricated panel and glazing system brings indirect natural light and ventilation into the buildings on all four sides, with glazing orientation adjusted to solar orientation.
