Boutique Sustainable Hotel Design Competition @ FlyingTeeth

leesafountain

Are you an architect with a passion for design and a deep appreciation of a destination’s unique geographical character − its “sense of place”? In an effort to find “the architect,” FlyingTeeth is proud to announce its first ever Boutique Sustainable Hotel Design Competition.

Why we are looking for “the architect”?
It is FlyingTeeth’s long-term goal to develop a brand of boutique sustainable hotels in the Caribbean and Latin America. As we continue to build our team, we want to ensure the inclusion of only the most passionate and responsible individuals. When it comes to “the architect,” we are looking for someone who not only enjoys a team atmosphere but someone who is willing to work hand-in-hand with site planners and the design team we already have in place. We are looking for someone who’s approach is not only fresh, progressive and alternative, but someone who takes sustainability seriously and understands all of its components. Too often do architects focus on the “green” aspects of a building and forget all about the importance of cultural sensitivity − while a LEED rating has its benefits, a futuristic building slapped down in the middle of a small island is not exactly socially sustainable. We are looking for an architect that understands this dichotomy and is willing and excited to explore the nuances of a particular place. Whether that means incorporating ancient roofing techniques or meeting with a group of locals to understand the way climate affects building circulation, we want an architect that is willing to dig deep.

If you think this is you, please submit a cover letter, resume and any supporting documents (i.e. a portfolio, recent designs, etc.) that may convince our team of your ability and authenticity. After review, if we find there is a match, we will notify you with an invitation to our competition. Please see below for competition details.

On behalf of the FlyingTeeth team, we are sincerely excited to find “the architect” and look forward to hearing from you.

So wait, let me get this straight:

"If you think this is you, please submit a cover letter, resume and any supporting documents (i.e. a portfolio, recent designs, etc.) that may convince our team of your ability and authenticity. After review, if we find there is a match, we will notify you with an invitation to our competition. Please see below for competition details" - taken from the flyingteeth website.

Okay, after I submit the cover letter, resume, and portfolio and (Assuming) I am invited to the competition, is that when me and my team pay the $100 entry fee?

I worry about any competition set up in Miami. The architecture profession and anything related in this city is shady at best; I should know, I've worked/lived here!

Good Evening Everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to read about our competition and even furthermore, to comment.

I'd like to take this time to clarify a few points as there seems to be a bit of confusion.

First of all, our original format for this competition was 'by invitation only.' Only recently have we decided to open it up to the general public. Like the competition details iterate, "we are looking for someone to join the FlyingTeeth team." And thus, the position and the prospective architect's capabilities and sensitivities are very specific. We want to ensure the inclusion of only the most passionate and responsible individuals.

With that being said, we did not want to limit ourselves to only the South Florida market. We see the current competition format as a means of "globalizing" our talent pool. However, out of consideration for teams, individuals and students whose approach does not fit our company mission, we are requiring a cover letter and resume before extending an invitation. In other words, we do not want to waste anyone's time if we do not see a match.

In regards to the entry fee, these funds will be used to cover costs associated with application processing, website design and maintenance, competition related events, etc.

In the event that a team, individual or student cannot provide the suggested entry fee, we will certainly consider waiving it.

Again, thank you for your comments. I hope I have addressed your concerns and as always, if you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at leesa@flyingteeth.com

Warm Regards,
Leesa @ FlyingTeeth

Two things are certain at this point:
1. They can't stick to a schedule
2. They can't make a decision

Hello Architects!

On behalf of FlyingTeeth and Cadence, we are very excited to announce our second-round finalists. However, due to an overwhelmingly positive response, we must ask for your continued patience while we postpone this announcement once more. Given the volume and depth of your submissions, our team finds it necessary to extend this deliberation process and looks forward to announcing the finalists on June 30th, 2010.

Here are the key points we are attempting to use during this process:

1) sensibilities regarding sustainability

2) island experience

3) implementation of authenticity in regards to creating a sense of place

4) presentation

5) synergy with current design team

Again, thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best Regards,

Leesa @ FlyingTeeth

Interest + Enthusiasm!

Good afternoon Architects,

Thank you again for your interest and enthusiasm regarding our Boutique Sustainable Hotel Design Competition. As mentioned before, we created this competition as a means to developing relationships with individuals that understand, live and teach the philosophies of sustainability. Creating synergies with people who truly “get it” is critical for our success as a company. Your emails, packages, phone calls, cover letters and resumes have reassured us that we are not alone in our goal to build — both buildings and companies — sustainably.

Due to an overwhelmingly positive response, we would like to extend our decision-making deadline to June 15th so that we can better delve into all of your wonderful, well-thought submissions. On June 15th, we will contact all contestants via email as well as post to our blog the firms, individuals and students that have made it to the second round.

On behalf of FlyingTeeth and our partners, thank you again!

Warm Regards,

Leesa @ FlyingTeeth

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Thank you for voicing your concerns and opinions.

To clarify, when FlyingTeeth decided to embark upon this search, we could have never predicted such a positive response. Furthermore, the amount of detail and thought put into each submission has been inspiring. With this, we feel that the same amount of attention and thoroughness should be returned during our decision making process. Hence our delay.

Again, we apologize for any inconveniences that this may have caused and understand that our evolving timeline may result in the withdrawal of applicants.

For any additional concerns/questions, please feel free to contact me directly at leesa@flyingteeth.com

Warm Regards,
Leesa
