Portfolio

Right then,

I have taken the opportunity for my 80th thread to publish my portfolio.

This is a little project I have been working on and there are some more architecture projects to include later, but I would be interested in your thoughts.

This is not for a job or school application, just a collation exercise. Its best to download it, or print [its an A4 PDF].

that's very brave, thanks for posting.
I think your thesis was incredibly mature for an undergrad student and it looks like you're still assessing its potential.
I can't read everything because it probably works best printed but it reminds me a bit of some of David Adjaye's work, simple yet complex at the same time.
what do you mean by design systems, a design method or a design generative device?

Thanks ckl,

The systems work is ongoing and really at very early stages. Its an interesting exercise in terms of taking two rather broad sets or mediums - language and geometry - and inventing something that sists in between that allows for feedback and change.

The drawing included for the Argot system is akin to a back of the napkin sketch - its a very basic 'translation' of one of my favourite texts. I am thinking of developing it further and seeing if anyone can 'decode' it as every mark has a meaning.

I am simplifying the terms a little bit.

The other Memex project is far simpler.

So they are pretty versatile systems that are both design methodology and generation machines. These ideas have kept me awake at night for some years now anyway.

ckl - just a note - that thesis was at the end of a 5 year b.arch - RMIT at the time didnt have the b.arch/m.arch split.

I assumed as much, how long did you do thesis for -a year, a semester?
I am reminded of the discussion to end thesis practice in many schools because very often the work being produced starts from an interest, a vague idea or exploration but is rarely a truly original work, rife with all sorts of potential.
I think you got pretty far with yours, though I am not able to read all the theoretical underpinnings. Do you find it a closed process or you feel compelled to go back to it because some things got lost in the process of narrowing your focus?

RMIT split the final year into a pre-major project semester, and a major project semester. For my pre-major, I was working within the SIAL unit doing a collaborative project with Gehry Partners and MIT which was great. So that semester is seen as researching and formulating a thesis, and then major project is all about production.

I think within the constraints I set for the thesis I achieved alot, but the process or the ideas behind it can be duplicated, modified and extended.
