for both your posts, word mapping and powerpointslide to vector I would recommend Illustrator. The PP2vector can be done by using the livetrace function, and for creating pretty tree diagrams just create paths with arrowheads at the end to put your texts or whatever you want. I always like http://www.computerarts.co.uk to look for tips and tutorials for illustrator or use adobe's website.

Word Mapping SOFTWARE?
I want to create a word map with connections (a complex tree diagram)
im looking for a program to use... something easy.
i can do it on powerpoint but it must plotted as poster size.
