Congrats Razvan, yunez and praxis99 on your success at applying to these top schools!
So yunez is from the Philippines. What about you other two - Razvan and praxis99 - where abouts are you guys from? It would be interesting to see the diversity here.
Also, I'm guessing rejection letters from the GSD are usually at least a few days later than the acceptance letters are sent? Looking forward to that.... :P
Congratulations yunez!! I was born in the Philippines too, in Baliuag! just got back from a 2 month trip back there. Where abouts are you?
Did you post your portfolio sometime in this thread? I vaguely remember something but can't recall. What's your bachelors in? anyways good luck, that's going to be tough decision.
oops nevermind saw the portfolio, and you're a biochem major. sorry lots of pages on here can't keep track anymore. I can see why they accepted you to all those places!
In at UCLA - M.ArchII - via email on Saturday night. It was not an official email, really, but an acceptance nonetheless. The open house does look amazing... yet it is also 3000 miles and a $300 plane ticket away. It is the one school I have not visited that I applied to... ugh... decisions, decisions...
Congrats to everyone who heard good news over the weekend.
sbeth, rice has only notified option 3 people (I think). so unless you already have a professional architecture degree, you might still be in the running @ Rice.
villain- i took making + meaning last summer, and i realized that i tended to get the point only AFTER the assignments were turned in. like, my interpretation of what they were asking for was completely different than what they had intended.
so too, i am realizing only now, after this long process, what i should have realized from the beginning. i guess it's good to get the point at SOME stage of the game, i just wish i could do it BEFORE, not after.
I wasnt really trying to keep your hopes up; just saying I dont think they've even started to notify first-prof degree candidates, so no point in fretting over not getting a call.
overall, i was very impressed with SCI-Arc. Even though they have a reputation for computer modelling, you'll find that everything is incredibly hands-on: they expect you to get your hands dirty. Amazing woodshop, CNC, etc. They definitely cultivate independence- you need to go build it yourself. So I really think SCI-Arc has the best worlds.
Possible cons:
- a lot of archibabble
- imho, horrendously ugly building. yeah, it's cool that people can skateboard up and down the halls, and that the space is open and versatile. but if i don't see any greenery, my soul dies.
- from the final projects i saw, felt like the style between most of the students were very similar, looked like sci-fi movie sets.
But then again, that was just my impression from the summer.
Just got off the phone with the graduate director of UNC-Charlotte's program....
calling to congratulate me and to answer any questions I might have. First official acceptance!
NC State - ? (decisions coming in a week or two)
Clemson -? (Assuming no)
UNC-Charlotte - IN!!!!
Georgia Tech -? (decisions around end of the month)
Houston -?
Try to come up with some questions in case the school calls you... i didn't have any and sounded like an idiot. Too late to revoke my acceptance for that I suppose haha
Good to know. Speaking to architects, I have heard only good things about Sci-Arc. Reading on discussions like this, there is a mixed message. I am glad to hear that they want you to build things, that is right up my alley. If I get in I guess I will just bring an aloe plant or something to green up the atmosphere. Thanks
congrats pepto!
I really like UNC-Charlotte... they have some pretty neat resources. They are a more design/build based school and have a really active AIAS chapter (the current president of AIAS is from there). plus i like charlotte as a city.
I just got a call from U Minnesota saying I got in, and that I was still missing 2 letters. It is impossible to get letters anywhere these days!
These calls really seem to catch people off guard. It's hard to stay coherent!
Lewis- I don't really know much about the UCLA program...I will say the UCLA campus is fantastic, really beautiful. The only point I have to add is I think if you are considering any UC campus the budget issues CA is having are relevant. I remember reading a few articles about the effects the budget crisis is having on the UC system and UCLA in particular. I know they were considering closing the Arts library (which I believe includes architecture)...not sure if they did or not because there seemed to be a huge outcry. Also they had a 32% tuition increase this past year...and I read that there is fear they will have a similar increase next year. Not sure if this is really here nor there and how it would affect the architecture program but I think it is worth looking into.
lewisandclark, I am mixed on UCLA... I am a post prof (m.archII) and the program seems both fascinating and limiting at the same time. The post prof allows you to work directly with a real world client and consultants with Mayne as your faculty/advisor - it would be an incredible opportunity - but I also question paying/going to grad school to mimic what I already do at the office? I just dont know right now. The faculty and pedagogy is top-notch, just not sure if what I want out of graduate school fits into its current way of doing things...
Regarding CA budget woes, I applied to great schools which all happen to be expensive as well, so where I get in and what aid I receive will weigh heavily on my decision. There seems to be some gripe about applying to ivy and/or expensive schools due to future debt which, trust me, is a concern, but I also feel these schools are the ones that are able to provide aid. Catch-22, I suppose.
UCLA is the one school I havent visited, so it is hard making an informed decision without seeing the place/facilities first-hand. I am debating where the Open House is a possibility for me...
i also applied to gsapp (no), gsd, mit (slience=no) and upenn.
my undergrad was done at UofT as well, but my major was in the life sciences. so i am one of those trying to get in without a prior background. hence my portfolio is so different from the ones I've seen here. made me feel quite incompetent. :(
i graduated in '06 and have worked a few years in different parts of the world. so i'm 27.
2010 M.Arch applicants, commiserate here!
GSD!!!! in M.Arch AP! :)
any yes - fedex package in my mail box!!
i went all the way home from work just to go get it!

there is no way gsd would forgive the application I submitted... but whaveter...
congrats you two!

i am in paris at the moment - working for an architecture/planning office here
greg. - don't give up yet!!
USPS is not closed on Saturdays yet, they are just starting to push that change through congress.
And they were apparently sent through Fed-Ex anyway which is a private company :)
congrats people who got good news from Rice! .. were you opt 1 or opt 2 applicants?
Things look like they're in full swing now ..
Congratulations yunez!! I was born in the Philippines too, in Baliuag! just got back from a 2 month trip back there. Where abouts are you?

yunez: super kudos.

I'm from Toronto, but my mailing address i left as my parents' place. (uptown) so i should give them a call tonight i guess.

just checked the website
i didn't get any updates there
thevillian: option 3 at rice, post-prof MArch.

ah, thanks ncsu85.. makes me feel a bit better about not receiving a call. congrats again! think you'll go?
thevillian: i dont know, i got a full scholarship to UT-Austin. its hard to turn that down.
that would be hard to turn down. goodluck!
ncsu- congrats, now you don't have to worry about the debt issue. that's amazing.
Looks like I'm down for the count, no word from Rice or UCLA.
Guess it's all for the best.
sbeth, rice has only notified option 3 people (I think). so unless you already have a professional architecture degree, you might still be in the running @ Rice.
wait ncsu85, when did u hear from austin? i am still waiting to hear...buess it won't be good news...?
i got a call from post-prof director last week. but he seemed to imply they were still in the process of notifying people.

You said you went to making + meaning, what did you think of Sci-Arc?

No one has gotten anything yet from Cal, right?

Has anyone else on here heard anything from UBC?

hi st1tch, thanks for the info., do you mind sharing how you found out about this? thanks.
congrats jaded!! were you at the nov. open house?
mitboi,
I contacted Lucy with a question regarding my application and she included that information along with her response.
no i wasn't. i will try my best to come this open house, but i need visa. that may take time.
but whatever, congrats to all of us!!!
What do people think about UCLA? I love their faculty, of course... The student work interests me (but so does most student work).
I've read almost everything on Archinect regarding them... and I feel like I've heard some less-than-positive-discussions about them as of late.
Anyone in our 2010 commiserate thread care to comment?
thanks St1tch, did Lucy mention whether its by postal mail or via email?
mitboi,
no she didn't, but last year they were through email so I suspect email again.
ah thx St1tch. I'm also in Toronto waiting for results for UofT / UBC.

Sorry for all of the questions. I'm just curious:)
