can i get people's thoughts on the whole money thing... at this point, i'm hoping i'll get in to ucla or berkeley. $12k/year tuition since i'm a ca resident. the cost of tuition is literally 1/3 the cost of most other schools, if not even 1/4 or less.
wow. i can't believe how expensive school is. it's no wonder only rich kids get to go. fuck!!! how discouraging.
i just called U Miami (FLA's) office to see when decisions will be mailed (i'm going to be out of town if it gets here), and they said we should know by next week.
Had a great conversation with a graduate director this AM, and got my first (unofficial) acceptance! He said the committee looked quite favorably on my app and hope to see me at the open house next month!
Not as exciting as everyone's Ivy league admissions, and not my first choice school either. But it is for a local school I was very impressed with when i visited last fall. I'll post a name when i get official notification in a few days, but for now this is a huge relief to know I've got at least one option for the fall
@word2bird: I feel the exact same way. There's a lot of things to weigh in the next few weeks. I'm looking at 6 figures of debt with a starting salary that'll be a third of that..... too early to think too much on this though. need other schools' decisions/financial aid packages.
@sixtrain and word2bird: same. maybe we should start a new thread?
I understand the debt thing, but how is everyone paying for the next three years of existence?
Each school I applied to has about $20,000-$30,000 annual tuition, not factoring in cost of living. The limit for grad Stafford loans is $20,000 per year, and I can only reasonably expect to make about $10,000 from a part-time job. Full fellowships are highly rare (maybe even a myth?) and as far as I know stipends are non-existent. So, how do I eat?
I'm looking into grad PLUS loans and Perkins loans... any other ideas?
If GSD doesn't send the notices out today, will they be able to send them out during the break? According to grad cafe, some notifications were post-marked during the same week that their spring break is held this year, but I'm not sure if their spring break last year was held during the same time.
Does anyone know how much longer FedEx postage tends to arrive to international addresses compared to national addresses?
doubtful BigRed...I have a bad feeling that we won't be hearing anything this wk...so i guess not until they get back from SB...which suckkkksss!! GSD, UPenn, UT and Pratt...i have decisions to make here. don't keep me hanging!!!
lol. "razzle dazzle". i dunno if my portfolio is what i'd call amazing, but i'll definitely look into throwing it online this weekend, if you guys think it's worth it.
looking forward to meeting some of you at open houses and stuff.
My friend who applied to another program in Havard (not GSD) told me that the admission ppl will be sending out decisions AFTER the spring break... that's another week to wait!
Razvan - yea, pls post your folio! i'd love to see it too.
I only applied to three schools - MIT (yes), GSAPP (no-ugh!), GSD - and waiting for GSD's decision to wrap up this year's application. Booking my trip to Boston for the open house..

Cococha, I assume that your friend was referring to the program s/he applied to though, not necessarily GSD. Different programs send notices at different times, and gradcafe points to sometime next week as the probable time that MArch I applicants will start hearing from GSD.
I've spent the past few months lurking here and particularly in late November when I decided to apply, this site proved to be wonderful resource and a great inspiration. I spent 2 weeks prepping for the GREs, 2 weeks putting my portfolio together and less than a week writing my essays. To tell the truth I had strong suspicions that I might not get in anywhere. I even began looking into getting my CELTA (English teaching certificate) and teaching abroad in Japan -- I really believed my chances were close to nil.
But lo and behold I got an email from U of Oregon yesterday accepting me into their M.Arch Option III program! I was sitting in the DMV when I found out. I shouted out, “Oh my God… Oh my God!” looking up a moment later to find the whole office [about 15 people] staring at me. “I got into Grad School!” I said. And that was that.
My undergraduate focus was in sustainable design and engineering so I am thrilled to have the option of attending U Oregon. I am still waiting to hear back from U Washington and UBC but I just thought I’d share the happy news and thank you all for the inspiration you have given me.
For those waiting on GSD notifications, the Harvard Grad Schools operate independent of one another, so just because one of the schools is notifying after spring break does not mean GSD is as well.
GSD snail mailed last year for some strange reason while in prior years it had emailed. I have heard nothing either way from this end of how it will go down this year, but I would have to expect that people will be receiving something in the next few days. It's only a short time from now that a final decision will have to be made for all of you guys.
tashmu - how funny, I was doing something similar to you, i.e. getting a teaching certificate (in my case TESOL) to teach english abroad. I sent out applications to teach in Asia but decided to work at my old office until I go back to school. Still working on the TESOL certificate since I already paid for it!
oh I think I'm in at UNC Charlotte... it says
"Your application has been forwarded to our Graduate School Office upon which they will perform a brief review. After this you should be notified via the ApplyYourself website about your acceptance."
and then I got an email about the open house (won't be going, i'm already familiar with the program & school) but still. does this mean I'm in?
lol maybe I'm just thrown off because it didn't start with Congratulations! or have "YOU'RE IN" in the subject line
Man, I need a drink. Just got booted from not one but two schools... Don't even think I'm going to grad school. This is like a heavy rock on my shoulders I can't put down. I'm beginning to doubt if I'm any good at architecture--I should probably take up a job as a cab driver and see if I'm any good at that.
Advance standing, according to one woman in admission I spoke with at their open house, has been given to one student in the last 3 semesters!
They will give you a handful of classes off the top (3?) and take any other credit you may have and use that as a pre-req for letting you take more advanced classes, i.e, advanced curtain wall rather than a methods and materials class.
ah, thanks alonso.. that's what I thought I heard about columbia, just clarifying. well, it might just be worth biting the bullet that is extra money and time to get the gsapp experience.. some heavy decisions coming up for me.
keep your head up hw10. I felt the same way you do 2 years ago, and felt like a shitty designer for 2 years because of it. told myself not to give up, kept working hard, despite a lack of confidence, and now it's all come full circle.
seriously ya'll. put in the word and your time will come. don't let people fool you. it's all about the hard word and time spent that leads to quality. there are no short cuts. don't sleep!
what's meant to be will be. those who aren't getting such great news should push through. like they say, we don't do this for the money, we do it for love. don't force yourself. don't put yourself through it if there's no love. but if the love is there, just dig deep. si se puede! yes we can!

hw10, your last comment reminded me of my dad, who took some crappy majors in college that lent him minimal career prospects (e.g. language) and ended up cab driving afterwards because he couldn't find anything else. He later decided to take the LSAT, ended up in a top law school and is now making upwards of $600,000 annually.
Congrats Villain... You persevered and you got in! I'm very happy for you and those who got in.
I'm just being hit with the fact that I got not one but two first round rejections. I was not even wait-listed. That says a lot about what they thought of my work. I think driving cabs would be good for me. I could hide the rejection and the shame.
congratulations on your acceptance to UBC! I'm still waiting to hear back from them. Hopefully the rest of us waiting on this thread will hear some good news soon as well.
hw10--just keep trying. lots of people are in their second year of applying to grad schools bc they didn't get what they wanted the first time around...
i might as well be feeling the sting of rejection from columbia...i mean i'm glad i got in and all, but i didn't get near enough sholarship money to actually considering GOING...so waitlisters, don't despair, one of you will probably get my spot :(
what is everyone else doing about these insane tuition fees? grants? loans? outside scholarships? any advice? aghhh!!!
Villian, I got say man - I'm proud of you, lol. You must feel so f-ing good man, I even feel happy for you myself! Real glad to see you got into GSAAP. Next stop: GSD
2010 M.Arch applicants, commiserate here!

does GSD only mail out physical letters, or do they e-mail?
Pretty sure GSD is all about the standard mail. Actually I think they send them by FedEx

congratulations to all friends who got in GSAPP! is there anyone who got into MSAUD?

Got into Columbia. They offer zero aid to international students.

I don't think the admissions office takes a spring break. At least, they shouldn't when they're on the verge of handing out decisions.
I think FedEx takes 4 working days for international delivery. If the GSD pays more, it'll probably be faster.
It doesn't hurt to hope...
Congrats to all the Columbia people...glad the wait was for good news!
I wish Pratt would get on it...
come on UW and RISD.

Cococha: i will try my best this weekend.
waqas: yep, they don't. there was no $$ specified on the notification i got other than kindly informing me they're charging 20k for tuition a term.
point at which i was like: kiss my grasshopper in its processing parametric ass.
Did anyone get into GSAPP and not get an email ? Only an updated website.

Greg. - Yeah, I totally agree. I hope they will just mail out the decisions!

hey does anyone know how gsapp handles advanced standing/opting out of credits?
This site is addicting! I'm done with checking this thread. Good luck everyone. Maybe I'll see you at the Wash U open house?
still nothing from GSAPP. :(
but just got an acceptance package from UBC :)
