had the same feeling from Rice... I emailed to confirm they had a missing transcript, and it sounded quite ominous. Like, she knew who I was, and the news would not be good.
To the person who got called- look, the Dean of the school is not going to personally call all the rejects (I think there were a few hundred applicants!) So I would say you're good to go...
are you going to MIT's open house? i am debating whether its worth the 450 euro airfare...
GSD vs MIT anyone? i am having a hard time making a decision...
MIT has given me A LOT more financial aid but GSD was my top choice... its a tough call
i echo my recommendation to mmarch13. i visited gsd and i wasn't really impressed. plus the atmosphere is really gloomy and it doesn't seem it will be fun at all to work there for 3.5yrs. last year around spring i visited columbia and it definitely seemed to be a more exciting program and experience in general. if columbia is offering more financial aid, and you decided to choose between gsd and columbia, i'd say the obvious choice is columbia.
thanks for the response jizzy
i know what you mean - a lot of my friends that have graduated from the GSD hated it... but then it could just be the person
but then again.. GSD did give me AP (so 2.5 years..).. so one year less tuition to pay (i am just offered M.arch 3.5 years at MIT)... and one more year that could be spent actually working/making money
ah, in that case it's not that clear-cut of a decision. maybe gsd since 2.5 yrs of hell is better than 3.5 yrs, and you get da monies sooner of course.
WUSTL is really remote, but I think the fact that they let you go abroad for up to 2 semesters (choice between 3 different programs in Buenos Aires, Helsinki, and Seoul) makes it unbelievably unique. Thats an educational experience that not only sounds incredibly awesome and fun, but life-changing (that came out really cliche sounding).
+ you get a MArch degree from one of the best schools in the country, consistently ranked in the top 10.
guyforget, when i said that a few of my ingredients for the berkeley application were missing i meant a missing transcript, something else and the 81 page portfolio instead of the 12 page one. i heard that if you submit more pages the admissions committee will look at them. time was squeezing me since i had a final review, france issues (visa, apartment, fiancé etc) and other applications to submit. therefore the portfolio that i posted is the portfolio that i sent to any school i applied to. It does need A LOT of editing (some images speak the same and the entire thing is very self indulgent) perhaps i will get around to that at some point.
praxis99, Hi where in Paris are you? I'm in the 5th. I am going to go to the MIT open house since i do not know much about the school and information on MIT isnt as available as it is on Columbia. I think im planning on leaving the 6th in the morning (tuesday) and return saturday. i will have to miss a fair amount of classes, but it may be worth it. im trying to pay with world points so it doesnt hurt my pocket too much.
Does anyone have a good insight on MIT? or MIT v GSAPP?
Evolutionary Idea: skip school... let's get together and form our own school online and call it the Online Graduate School of Architecture... we could have forums like this where we post our work virtually, and then we could work from home and get informal crits by our peers... this seems like an addictive forum and I think everyone has been working on their own with their portfolios and such. I don't know how feasible this may be. I'm just putting it out there.
It's 1 PM in London, England and still no Fedex. Damn, I guess no Harvard this year then. Good luck to all those in the U.S waking up after countless dreams about the GSD...may the postman come swiftly to your door.
hw10, I need me some bona-fide profs and human interaction, but I wouldn't mind having an "All-MArch Crit" thread where we do exactly what you're talking about.
hellas, doesn't international mail sent from the US usually arrive later than mail sent to somewhere else in the US, if the mail is sent out at the same time? and since most US ppl apparently haven't received any acceptance mail yet, it seems unlikely that international ppl would. or is fedex usually faster compared to usps? i'm not sure, just asking. anyway don't give up hope yet fellas

likedrift: hmmm maybe you're right, I assumed Fedex would be faster than USPS but maybe not-I just thought that since packages arrived in the Phillippines and France...and London is closer to the US...aaaggghhh the waiting game is killing me! why can't they just e-mail like everyone else!?
uh oh... I fall asleep and wake up to see that Cornell and Berkeley are notifying?!?! Not to mention missing half a page on this thread.
guyforget: Responding to your earlier post about Colorado's Program. I went to their undergrad and I have to say that the program is definitely improving, especially in terms of Urban planning. How ever the program really lacks a strong focus in any particular area and lacks organization and collaboration with any of the undergraduate studies. A new dean and some fresh blood have done alot towards revitalization but I just don't think it is there yet. You have already been accepted to some great programs so my opinion is to try some of those out first. Hope this helps!
NLW2, yes... we could have avatars instead of our real names... it would be totally anonymous... and then we get our degrees with our real name and avatar name... I'm going out on a limb here...
I'm all for the "All-March Crit"--I think that would work and I'm pretty sure there's enough interest.
thanks jizzy...I think the logical choice is GSAPP as well...either way, i'll be moving about 1,500 miles lol...i'll be a yankee before i know it...no offense intended!
so i'm guessing the silence to my question about UT means that no one on here who got accepted to UT actually got offered money? i find that strange...hmm oh well if anyone HAS been offered money, let me know...still curious....
@mmarch13: hey I'm in a (kinda) similar situation, sans GSD admission. Got into GSAPP with a tiny little scholarship. Love the program and the school to death.
Got into UT Austin, but haven't heard about financial aid. How did you find out? Was it in the original e-mail?
For me, financial aid or not, it's the difference between over $100,000 of debt and $50k of debt. Not a choice to be taken lightly...
2010 M.Arch applicants, commiserate here!
ooo Cornell waitlisted ..
hahaha

I keep checking my cell phone.
guyforget, I am concerned about the location of WUSTL too. I know it has a good program but seems like it is a little remote.
lewisandclark, i am wondering about the financial aid from Pratt?!?! on the way?!
Wonder - Concern - Wonder - Concern
o1nichols !@
i am applying from paris too!

i'd say go to MIT. much better program from my experience, and if they're giving you a lot more financial aid ... well, what else is there to say?

believe me i have friends who attend gsd and they are miserable. my mit and columbia buddies however didn't seem nearly as unhappy when i visited them
thanks for the response jizzy

There's a lot of cross-over between GSD and MIT. When I visited both, it seemed like they were virtual extensions of each other.
its one of the great advantages of the two schools - is that they capitalize on their proximity to each other and share a lot of their resources
however, you'll still be taking all you primary core classes at the school you decide to go to
also I know that the gsd is a lot bigger in terms of class size then mit
unfortunately, i haven't been able to visit mit, I'd be happy to know what people's opinions are of the two schools

o1nichols - i work in the 3rd and live in the 11th - one of my colleagues here who goes to yale did the newyork paris program too
maybe i'll see you at the MIT open house! i know what you mean about the website not having sufficient information...
yeh i was planning on going between the 7th - 11th - taking the weekend to see the city

ilikedrit -
but i do think they are still sending them out - they need to work out all the financial stuff too for each person

ha! I like that on grad cafe someone's berkeley rejection came with a hefty scholarship and is a, quote, dream come true.
here's a song Madonna wrote wrote while she was waiting for her letter from the GSD...
